I just started using Craigslist with a modest bit of success. My brother has been using it for awhile but his first piece of advice to me was to 1) try and get some sense of your buyer by phone first, 2) try to meet the buyer at the door before inviting them in, and 3) be sure you are either not alone or the buyer (preferably) comes alone to help cut down on the risk of home invasion or robbery.
Any other hints or tips to make using Craigslist safer?
I just got an email the other day about making money on Craigslist. There are a few other alternatives to Craigslist too. Have you ever tried any of those?
Well Koo/dgridley this post seems to have turned into a 3 part question for you.

I've only ever use ebay and craigslist. What others are there?
The biggest thing to remember when using Craigslist is to beware of the spammers. There seems to be alot of that going on with craigs lately. Best thing is to just ignore any emails you get that just doesn't 'sound' right. And never contact anyone that says they are out of the area right now but...
I also got an email saying I could make money on craigs..not sure what it is all about and no I've not tried any others.
Are there others? Well thebubbler.com has a great CLASSIFIED section. Have you put anything on here to sell yet?

I use Craigs List to advertise for my pet sitting. Sometimes my message is flagged and many times not. Then when flagged it's removed.
Silly thing is its someone just being a *ss, because it's always the same post and I leave enough space inbetween my posts.
I was told I can not post pet sitting in the pet section. I asked where should I post it then? I was told small business. So I went there and saw all the call girl ads...yeaa...a dog owner is going to look there.
So I waited a few days and reposted to craigslist where I always post. Same ad and it stayed up.
I also get alot of spammers contacting me on the side and I just delete.
i would recommend not using your personal email address on craigslist
just create a free email thru yahoo or some other one
also if selling something smaller try to meet at a public place
never reply to emails that have broken english and horrible misspelling offering to pay your asking price and more to ship often times the nigerians just spam reply craigslist without even knowing what you are selling.
Free Classifieds for Wisconsin here at theBubbler.com
I'm a heck of a lot more fond of the free classifieds for Wisconsin here at theBubbler!
If someone really wants to unload something in Wisconsin, try both if you want. My problems with the other guys: 1)Like everyone says, spammers and scammers; while we can't make any guarantees, we work hard to eliminate pupply mills and the like here. 2) They're not local. We are. 3) Half the ads there seem to be for "making money in your sleep" or "work in our bar in a wet t-shirt" - at theBubbler we make every effort to be "family-friendly"

Be careful anywhere you go, even here.
At the other one, a teen girl was murdered when whe replied to a child care ad. An extremely sad situation, indeed. Always use care, as batman suggests.

I should have also mentioned that I have put things on the classifieds but actually never got a response to my ads. But I have found a few great things such as my Savannah cat. He is the best! My oldest daughter put that she was looking for an item one time and Keith had it for her. I never would have thought to ask him so the classifieds helped. I even found a place to rent for our vacation in the UP one year through the classifieds here. Right now a friend of ours is thinking about adopted a dog I found for her on the bubbler classifieds.
I think a lot of our members come on just for the classified section.

I've bought and sold and got freebies through our classifieds here on theBubbler. Some items from people within 2 miles! Sold a pontoon boat to someone from the Fox Valley from the Wisconsin free classifieds here. Got some free drywall (leftover from a job and being used inside a shed I built) from the gal that tends bar at a local hangout!
I'd like to see us do some more affiliate want ads here. Like Amazon and such, but not too much so we can keep the local Wisconsin flavor.
I have not shopped Amazon in a while...but now is a good time to tell all the new Members to click on our Amazon link to go to Amazon and the Bubbler gets a % of the sale!!
pk, you said you never got a response to your ads, did you include a picture? Pictures can make or break a sale. Always have at least one picture for your classifieds. Also maybe your price was a little high? Pictures, remember to add a picture
Scams on Craigslist, really there's scams there.. lol. Just kidding.
There's a few going around like selling something really cheap. For example, a BMW for a price of $2960. Anyone see that kind of price lately for cars on Craigslist? It's a scam! Also when they post an e-mail address in the post be careful, they are tying to get you away from Craigslist so they can't be tracked if the police are needed.
I've flagged many classifieds on Craigslist. I know it's a scam but I'm thinking, someone will see a really great deal and say where do I send my money before someone else buys it. I guess I try to do my part in trying to protect people that don't know any better.
If you see an e-mail in a classifieds ad do this, copy that e-mail address and input it in a search engine like google. If you see many results for other Craigslist areas (cities) Flag it. Remember Craigslist is local selling. Why are they selling a car in your city and also selling it in 10 other cities?
By the way I've sold a few things on Craigslist without a problem.

I have to go back and check which items I listed here. I have a lot going right now on ads and back then also. I do know I had a 17 foot Century Boat for sale that I thought for sure I would get some inquires on. And yes, I added pictures then.
I think I had a go cart on here too and a 1952 Dodge Meadow brook Car?
I think my problem... just having some unusual items. It wasn't like I had a van or a cute dog.
Oh, I do remember putting on an ad that my son was looking for a reasonable work car to buy and no one answered. I also listed for a friend of mine that lives up in the Wausau area that she was looking for a home down this way (Milwaukee area, Racine, Burlington, Kenosha County) and I think I only had one response and it was for a house about 2 hours away. No pics could be put on those ads though.
All and all though I love the classifieds here and I figure if I had more normal things I would get better responses.
But thanks for the thoughts on here...oh by the way...are you looking for a good go cart? lol How about an antique stove?

You know I am looking for a go-cart, but I'm looking for a rock bottom priced one so I can convert it to an all electric go-cart. I've seen some Youtube vids on electric carts and I wanted to try it myself. Those electric go-carts have awesome power.
I have not shopped Amazon in a while...but now is a good time to tell all the new Members to click on our Amazon link to go to Amazon and the Bubbler gets a % of the sale!!
