Agencies warn of another scam
Herald Times Reporter
MANITOWOC — The local Social Security office has notified the Manitowoc County Aging & Disability Resource Center that yet another scam regarding the issuance of Medicare cards has surfaced in Wisconsin.
Someone with an Eastern Indian accent reportedly is calling Medicare recipients and asking for bank account information so that a new Medicare card can be issued, according to a press release from Judy Rank, director of the Manitowoc County Aging & Disability Resource Center.
Social Security does not call people asking for personal information; the agency already has everyone’s birthday and Social Security number, according to the press release. Medicare cards come automatically after someone enrolls in Social Security.
Those receiving such calls should hang up without supplying any personal information, the press release states. People should handle mail with the same amount of care. Anything asking for a birthday or Social Security number is not from the government.
Anyone who questions the validity of mail received may call the ADRC at (920) 683-4180.
