*77 Cell Phone Direct To STATE TROOPER
*77
I knew about the red light on cars, but not the *77.It was about 1:00 p.m.in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. *Lauren's parents have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. *
Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called *77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her! The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was located and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.
Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.
I never knew about the*77 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe& place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call *77 like Lauren did.
Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this little bit of wonderful information.
*Speaking to a service representative at ** Bell ** Mobility confirmed that *77 was a direct link to state trooper info. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about *77.

This story in itself may be a hoax, but I can assure you that if I was on a rural road, and some unmarked car with a flashing light came up on me (especially if I knew I did not do anything wrong), I would question it. If you can't call *77, than I would think calling 911 would be the next thing to do.
How do you know if this car is for real or a fake? It isn't that difficult to get a red flashing light and it would be a way for a person to use it to thus making yet another trusting person a vicitim.
So what are the choices and advice from others on this?

For that matter, you can't be one hundred percent positive about a marked car either. Even if it's a real cop and not a stolen car, you might still be at risk if you're alone. The original story may be a hoax but such things do happen, and not infrequently. I have been a counselor for many rape victims, male and female, and a fairly high percentage of them were raped by someone in high authority over them, a police officer or a judge, for example, or someone posing as such an authority. It's the obvious cover for a predator.
Personally, I would not be inclined to stop if I was alone in the car; I'd continue to a public location. I'd rather take the bigger ticket for failing to stop.

Not "really" a hoax...
This is not a 100% hoax as CreedFreed says.
Check out: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/issue59.html
Then, scroll down the page to read the article.
It depends on where in the world you are at that moment in need...
Best bet, put you hazards on, call 911 to verify it is a cop behind you and keep driving to a more populated area. You have a right to acknowledge the officer (if this is a real officer of the law), by putting on your hazards and continuing to drive to a more public area before pulling over.

Creed Feed's link took me to a malware site. Apparently it is a hoax.

Re: *77 Cell Phone Direct To STATE TROOPER
I don't know about the *77 thing but here is something I received in an email recently about cell phones. I don't know if any of it is true or actually works though.
5 THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELL PHONE COULD DO
FIRST
Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked.
SECOND
Have you locked your keys in your car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unloc button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).
THIRD
Hidden battery power
Imagine your cell batter is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.
FOURTH
How to disable a stolen mobile phone
To check your mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: *#06# A fifteen digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. Your probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either.
FIFTH
Free directory service for cells
Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800) FREE 411, or (800)373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now.
This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving.

Re: *77 Cell Phone Direct To STATE TROOPER
For hoaxes my favorite website to check is snopes.com.
I've heard of men that pose as police officers and pull a woman over and rape her. One can never be too safe. I'm not sure where I read this info, but I'm almost sure it was Reader's Digest.
