From theBubbler Poll on Wednesday, March 02 @ 11:48:59 CST and from my personal journal on theBubbler:
Let's see...besides six kids, there's Riley, the one-eyed wonder dog, Sydney, the dumbest, most obstinate, yet (kinda, sorta) loveable Australian Terrier, Saphire, our Tabby (that is a story in itself) and Hera and Zeus, the Ferret Gods.
Riley's a Heinz 57 varieties we saved from the pound as a pup. He'd been abused and was so timid we never saw his beautiful tail (tucked between his legs) till we had him about 3 weeks. Heard one bark about a week after that. Now the tail is almost always up, like masts on a ship with fur billowing. And every time Riley goes out he barks his head off to let everyone know he's coming, probably because he can't see much. Riley had a detached retina and surgery didn't save that eye. Trouble is, he's on his way to going blind in the other eye.
Which leads us to Sydney. He wears bells on his collar so when Riley's blind Sydney will be his guide dog. We inherited Sydney when my wife's Mom passed away. You know how they say about pets being like their owners... I've gotten accustomed to him, nonetheless.
Now Saphire, she's a jewel. She was a newborn kitten to a litter in the wild. My Dad took care to leave food out for mom (still does) and the litter. My daughter fell in love with this one and I said NO. (Never been a cat person). Two months later I was up visiting my Dad, a 3 1/2 hour drive. Leaving his 1/2 mile driveway I thought I heard a meow. Checked throughout the car to be sure he hadn't planted a kitty in it. Got home, heard the meow again. Saphire, the one and only, same kitten my daughter named, had crawled into the engine compartment! She survived. The vet fixed her broken leg and we had to adopt her. And I've found out some cats are cool. Of course it helps that she thinks she's a dog. She's in one of the pictures in my Member profile (look closely, tucked in between my shins).
Ever heard of the "puppy dog close"? A sales technique pet store owners use, the salesman says take it home for the weekend, if you're not happy bring 'em back on Mondy. By Monday, the new pet is passe for the kids but Mom's fallen for it. Well, my son got Zeus, and then Hera. Now Mom takes care of them. When we let the ferrets out and all five are playing, it's a hoot.
That's it for now. We got rid of the fish.

Only in America would some folks spend more on their pets than people in many countries can afford to spend on their children!
