Walleye Release Boosts Fishing Tourism Industry

Wisconsin's two-billion dollar fishing tourism industry is getting a big boost from the DNR and local sport fishing clubs. Who knew something so small could have such a big impact? But they certainly do.

Thousands of walleye fingerlings raised in Kewaunee are now being sent to Sturgeon Bay. In a year and a half, they'll be big enough to be a part of Wisconsin's massive fishing tourism industry.

"Fishing is a major part of their tourism base and it is statewide. This essentially helps the fish population sustain all the fishing pressure that goes on, so it's real important," says Mike Baumgartner with Besadny Fisheries Facility.

So much so, they're expanding the program. Fishermen say this kind of work is critical to making Wisconsin's fishing industry what it is.

Right now, the walleye are only six weeks old. They're being dumped into Sturgeon Bay and Little Sturgeon Bay.
