River Fishing- Fall 2007
Finally !! the cooler weather i have been waiting for. the next 2 months should be "prime time" for hitting the great rivers of Wisconsin. Does anybody else enjoy this type of fishing ? i am planning a couple trips to the Mighty Wisconsin River in the next few weeks. At least one trip to the Mosinee area, probably once to the Nekoosa area, and hopefully a couple around Wisconsin Dells.
Of course i will post some pics and info about the GIANT walleyes that will undoubtably be caught...feel free to do the same. Maybe I'll see ya out there? 14' Mirrocraft, 9.9 Evinrude...big smile...heavy stringer...you can't miss me ~! Tight lines...good fishin' to ya !!

Re: River Fishing- Fall 2007
This is the best time of year for river fishing. I plan on going to the Menominee River and fish between the dams at Chaulk Hill near Amberg, WI.
It's an annual trip that always produces some surprises.

Re: River Fishing- Fall 2007
Hey Greg..I've never fished up there...but my inlaws have a cabin near Mountain, and i did fish on High Falls Flowage last weekend...I have been fishing the Flowages on the Wisconsin for 25 years or so...and always have good results...I'll try to post some pics here in the next couple weeks. Do you use jig and minnow, "lindy rigs", or the ever popular "wolf river rig" ? What kind of regulations and daily bag limits are there on that stretch of river ? Tight lines !!

Re: River Fishing- Fall 2007
I am not sure what the limits are. We always release.
I am going to try leaches with a drop shot as well as some new jigs that I bought. We will use these on walleyes. We will probably do a little casting with plugs and spoons toward the shores. I have had great luck on all of the rivers with a bass o reno. It's a small red and white plug. Seems to always surprise me. Last year I caught a nice 5 pound bass on the river with it as well as a few northerns.
Maybe I will drop a few photos on here when I get back if we catch any. The time will be split up between fishing and grouse hunting.
The dogs don't like to fish so we will have to hunt.

Re: River Fishing- Fall 2007
Well I've had two "mini-trips" i can report on....Thursday Oct 11, I was able to get a few hours fishing from shore at "the Dells"..it was one of those days when the wind was howling...so i didn't take the boat..i did catch 1 decent crappie, and a couple smaller ones and one short sauger...also 2 small bass (smallies) ...then last Saturday 13 Oct, I took my boat to Puckaway but fished only the Fox River, where it empties into the lake, there were many boats and fisherman there...and it was a beautiful day on the river...the fishing wasn't great...but i did manage a few nicer crappies...no walleyes, but i did get quite a few "short bites"..i figured them for small walleyes or maybe white bass ??....The folks at the "River's End" bait shop were very friendly and helpful...i highly reccomend stopping there.....THE big trip for the fall is coming up this weekend...7 guys, 3 boats...2 days on the Wisconsin River below Mosinee...this is our annual fall trip and we always bring back fish...or at the very least...fish stories....the weather is expected to be nice...and i will try to take some pics to post on here....tight lines....cabmaker

Re: River Fishing- Fall 2007
Fishing is always fun.
We are back from our Menominee River trip. We fished between the 2 dams that are south of Hwy K. They call the area above the dam on the north side of K, Chaulk Hills. We fished south.
We were out Wednesday afternoon, hunted on Thursday, and fished Friday in the rain and all day Saturday.
We caught a total of over 30 walleyes, 4 northerns, 2 largemouth, 1 smallmouth, a carp, a sucker, a couple of big crappies and a bunch of perch. The hot baits were a pearl colored jig with a minnow and also a #4 Mepps with a white tail.
We missed a lot of fish and lost some keepers at the boat. Most of the eyes were 12-14 inches.
We had a lot of action, lost a bunch of jigs and used a few dozen minnows.
All in all, the best trip in a couple of years of fishing.

Re: River Fishing- Fall 2007
the highly anticipated trip finally arrived, and completely met all my expectations.
only 5 of us were able to go..we spent Saturday on THE River below Mosinee and caught over 150 walleyes..i personally caught over 40..but none of mine met the 15" minimum..fortunately the other guys had better luck and as a group we managed 14 legal "eyes",the largest was 18"... we also had 1- 23" channel cat and a few nice crappies...the weather was perfect, which is unusual for our fall trip...we're used to 40's and 50's with rain and wind...we got 60's and 70's with sun and a slight breeze...simply awesome !!!
on Sunday 3 of us hit the lake section of Dubay..and we loaded up on crappies..35-40 fish ..all in the 11"-13" range....nice fish !!! AND we also found 8 keeper walleyes, the largest was 17"... and 2 HUGE bluegills....again the weather was beautiful...even nicer than Saturday..we actually left kinda early (by our standards) off the water by 2:00pm which was kind of nice because we stopped for a meal and still made it back to Beaver Dam before dark..of course i had to spend another hour cleaning fish...but HEY !! that is why i went !!
I don't know if i'll be able to get out again before ice up..."honey-do" list and all that...but this trip will hold me over until i can start a new thread on here...."Ice Fishing Hot Spots" be sure to watch this same "bat-station" for that one !!!
Tight lines to ya !!!
cabmaker....steve
ps: sounds like the fishing up north was great "demon"...someday i'll have to give her a go up there...were you guys in a boat or is there good shore fishing ? any luck in the woods ?
thanks for posting your report...

Re: River Fishing- Fall 2007
We saw a lot of grouse and woodcock and managed to miss most of them. There were only three of us that went hunting on Thursday and we had one dog that did a pretty good job. I would have to say that there are a lot of birds this year. We saw large numbers in each of the 4 areas that we hunted in. All of the areas were in Marinette County near Thompson and Tower Roads.
I may have to make one more trip yet this year. That may be wishful thinking on my part.
I sounds like you had a great trip as well.
This is the best time of the year by far.
We did all of our fishing from the boat. There are several places on both the Wisconsin side and the Michigan side that you can acess the river.
