Jones Island smelt run

Hi, my name is Maggie Koerth. I'm a freelance writer working on a story about smelt fishing and I'm looking for folks who'd be willing to let me tag along with them sometime next spring on a smelt run.

I'm most interested in Jones Island, because I've heard that's where you get the real crowds and that there's a lot of fishing history associated with the area.

But if you go smelt fishing someplace else that also draws a lot of people, please let me know. I'm not real familiar with the good spots and the magazine I'm working for is most interested in places where families have been going smelting for several generations. Places with a lot of history. And places with a lot of real characters.

Port Washington also gets some crowds.

In a former life, I went to the smelt runs each spring. Good times, lots of regulars that are found down at the water each year.
