"Silver" Labrador Retrievers

WARNING.... There are those out there who are advertising "Silver" Lab puppies for sale. The are asking extremely high prices for these puppies, $1000 plus when normal colors go for under 500.

Silver is not a color that is recognized by AKC, the only 3 colors are black, chocolate and yellow. It is considered a serious fault if a pure bred puppy from AKC parents is born silver or gray. It is recommended that if a pup is born silver that it be sold with limited registration or as a pet only and NOT be bred. That color is not recognized by AKC and they would not be eligible for any AKC shows. There is not even a silver color selection on a Lab's registration application.

It is also rumored to NOT be a purebred lab, but a cross of Lab and Wiemeraner (sp?)

Be cautious of breeders offering these color of Labradors.

Re: "Silver" Labrador Retrievers

Thanks for the heads up.. my family used to raise and show Wiemaraners and when I saw the post title that's what I immediately thought of. I also recall there was controversy even way back then about off-color Wiemaraners (liver or chocolate color).

I had one dog in the 90's whose coat was silver in summer, but would color up and darken during the winter as her winter coat came in.

To me, it's fine if they're sold as pets only unless or until they're recognized as an actual breed.

Re: "Silver" Labrador Retrievers

Right on Scarberry2003!
I have all acceptable colors of lab... not one is silver, or charcoal.
They are black, chocolate, and yellow. There are varying shades and tones of the yellow and chocolate, but they don't include silver or charcoal.
