Rescued or Recycled?

Thorp Dog Auction

MyFox Twin Cities | Investigators: Rescued or Recycled?

Family pets auctioned like livestock. You wouldn't think that's how people buy dogs. But it's what the Fox 9 Investigators found just across the river in Western Wisconsin. The laws are so lax there that dogs are actually auctioned off like cattle. Rescue groups swarm these auctions to save the animals. But are they helping or, actually adding to the problem?

Re: Rescued or Recycled?

This makes me mad being a pet owner of 3 dogs myself.

Re: Rescued or Recycled?

NoWisconsinPuppyMills.com is an endless resource on puppy mills on Wisconsin. If you don't know what a puppy mill is, please feel free to ask about them in this thread. A lot of people think they're just large pet breeding facilities, but they are much worse.

- Puppy mills breed dogs (and cats, birds, rabbits and other pets) strictly for profit.

- Size doesn't matter. Puppy mills can be large barns stacked with cages, or a home-based breeder keeping several dogs and litters of pups in the basement.

- Puppy mill breeders create animals with no regard for their health or humanity. Animals are bred to create litter after litter so the offspring can be sold for profit as fast as possible.

- Animals that cannot be bred are often killed or thrown out to fend for themselves.

- Puppy mill breeders are shady. They keep their breeding facilities secret, conduct transactions in parking lots and provide no history on their animals (or they make one up).

- Ignorant people buy puppy mill pets because they want the trendy pet of the month, or don't want to pay the prices legitimate breeders charge for a healthy animal.

- When someone purchases a puppy mill pet, the puppy mills profit to create more miserable animals, and the new pet owner takes home an animal sure to have mental and physical problems.

This is why the Animal Classified Terms of Service on theBubbler are so strict. Wisconsin is too lax on puppy mills and it's the least we can do. Even livestock in California will now be required, by law, to be kept in pens that allow for movement and the ability to lie down. Puppy mill breeders in Wisconsin can throw as many dogs as they wish in stacks of cages... and they will not be subject to inspection or regulation!

Here is a link to the NoWisconsinPuppyMills.com page featuring dogs from the Thorp Dog Auction. Horrific.

The last Thorp auction was held on September 24, 2008 with a sizable protest outside. If anyone has information on the next auction and protest, please post it here.

SUCCESSFUL PROTEST AT DOG AUCTION

Quote:
Our protest of the September 24th dog auction in Thorp was very successful! We had a great turnout and the weather really cooperated. We were very pleased to have great coverage from the media, including WQOW Channel 18 from Eau Claire and WSAW Channel 7 from Wausau. Pictures of the protest will be coming to the website soon. We extend our thanks to everyone who helped to spread the message that dog auctions are just wrong!
I dont see any new news on upcoming Thorp Dog Auctions....so far....phew!

PFL Petition

Help change the lives of thousands of dogs...sign the above petition

Add your name to the petition supporting the Pet Facilities Law in Wisconsin. the law, if enacted would help regulate breeders to ensure that animals raised for the pet trade will be raised humanely.
