There's a lot of common foods (or things that might be mistaken for food) that will make a dog sick, or even kill them.
This is some of the things a dog is likely to eat, but shouldn't ~~
Chocolate ~ baking chocolate is the worst, needing only 0.1 ounce per pound of body weight to kill a dog. Cocoa and milk chocolate should also be avoided. White chocolate is the least toxic, requiring 200 ounces per pound of body weight to cause death. It's the theobromine in chocolate that kills, found in chocolate liquor, coffee and tea.
Bones ~ Most types of bones will splinter, and these splinters may become lodged in the dog's throat. The best bone for a dog is the beef shin bone. Avoid chicken and pork bones.
Watch out for Bloat (gastric dilatation and volvulus syndrome or GDV), a condition that comes from eating too much too fast, especially in times of stress or just after exercise.
Changes in diet and gas producing foods may also contribute to this condition. Most often occurring in large dogs, the symptoms are; a distended abdomen, abdominal discomfort, severe weakness and shock.
This condition can be life threatening, and needs to be treated by a veterinarian as quickly as possible.
Another innocent looking food that may hasten your canine companion’s untimely demise is grapes.
Yes, grapes are a deadly poison to your dog. The same is true for raisins.
Veterinarians are still uncertain as to what exactly causes the reaction in dogs, the symptoms are repetitive ~ at first vomiting occurs within a few hours of ingestion of the grapes or raisins, thereafter the dog becomes lethargic and shows all the signs of abdominal pain...... when veterinary care is sought, blood tests reveal that the calcium level in the blood is dangerously elevated, as are other substances that indicate that kidney functions are severely impaired. As the illness progresses, complete renal failure finally kills the dog.
Macadamia Nuts are so yummy!! But not for your dog.
Probably a surprising culprit in canine sickness is the highly favored treat of the macadamia nut.
It does not appear that other animals are affected by this delicacy the way that dogs are.
Depending on the amount of nuts that the dog has eaten, within about a half day or less, you will be able to notice unusual lethargy, sometimes accompanied by vomiting, and an overall muscle weakness with accompanying muscle tremors.
Soon after, your dog will quite possibly not be able to stand or walk without your help for about another day or two. Fortunately, the effects of these nuts wear off and soon your canine companion should be back to her or his former self.
