Looking around on the web I found several references to the fact that on May Day the reason why many people would gather flowers and put them by their doors or that of their neighbors was to keep out troublesome fairies.
After reading this I do remember something about this story when we were young. It was also suppose to give good luck for the year?
The dance around the May Pole was to help bring in the new summer that was coming. It also use to be the first day of summer in many places.
We actually had a 'May Pole' in the park. I remember you had to grab the handle and everyone ran really fast and it would take you right off your feet and you could swing in the air. This was great until one time the chain and handle next to me did not have a kid on it and it came flying in the air over to me and hit the side of my forehead putting a big gash in my head. Needless to say we were banned from playing on it and it seems as if it wasn't long after that it was taken down out of the park.
OK, it's late and this is making me think to hard! I'm going to go to sleep and have dreams of May Poles swinging at my head now! lol
