$1 House On The Block at UW-Madison
One dollar, that is all it takes to buy a beautiful 1940's house on the UW campus and make it home. But, it's not quite that simple.
------
The two-story brick and stone house was built in 1940 as a practice cottage to train women how to be mothers.
In the 1970s the house was turned into offices. And now the school just wants to sell it.
This house isn't the only landmark in South Central Wisconsin that lately could have been purchased for a dollar. And all the others had strings attached as well.
You may remember the bridge in Soldiers Grove was up for sale for a dollar back in November of 2007. The only catch is that you had to tear it down. The town thought someone would want it for scrap.
And earlier this year, talks of the city purchasing the Overture Center for one dollar surfaced. Sounds like a great deal, but the performing arts building had 28 million in un-paid construction debt.
------
So what's the catch with this house? Outside the asbestos, likely mold issues, and obvious need for paint, it has to be moved to another location by February 1, so the School of Human Ecology can expand.
"It is a beautiful house and it has a great history to it," added Douthitt. "Many people will be sad to see the house sell if we are lucky enough to find a buyer for it."
A moving company estimated that it would cost $135,000 to lift the house off its foundation and move it 10 blocks. A commitment to purchase must be in by August 31.
