Accused Shoplifter Abandons Child at Mall
On Friday, around 3:13 p.m., Madison Police were sent to West Towne Mall to arrest a shoplifter who had abandoned her four-year-old niece while being chased from J.C. Penney by a store employee.
A loss prevention officer stopped the suspect in the parking lot, and responding officers arrested her.
She was wearing multiple layers of stolen clothing, and had other garment stuffed in her pants retail value of the stolen merchandise was over $500.
Witnesses say the little girl was not fast enough to keep up with her fleeing aunt, and was left behind in the store: scared, screaming and crying. She had yelled out: "Don't leave me," and "wait."
Arrested:
Female, age 18, Madison
Suspect was arrested and tentatively charged with Child Abandonment, and Retail Theft.
