I have pickle slices for putting on burgers/sandwiches. I'm hooked on Claussen's so I have always have those on hand, too.
I like baby dills, but don't buy those very often because they are more expensive than larger pickles.
Only thing I've ever use the juice for is when I make a pot of dill pickle soup. It's a Polish recipe that I tried to copy from Milwaukee's Crocus restaurant.
I like the Vlaasik Zesty Dill pickles. They are kind of hot, but that's the way I like them.
I do have some regular baby dills and bread and butter pickles in the fridge left from Easter. Speaking of bread and butter pickles, I remember eating bread and butter pickle sandwiches as a kid which was just that...pickles on buttered bread. I wonder if that's how they got their name?

Well I never heard of that before, and I love Polish food.
Basically what is in it?
Just wondering...has anyone made homemade pickles before?
I've never canned pickles, but I do make a batch of refrigerator pickles from cucumbers at least once a year. They last a really long time in the fridge and taste so good.
I never thought of that. I will have to try it next time I make deviled eggs.
Actually we chopped real fine a little pickle and use a small amount of juice in it. Gives it just a pop of a flavor rather than just bland eggs etc. If you like pickles you should like this.
Oh and don't forget to sprinkle paprika across the tops.

I always wanted to try it but never got around to it or the smaller cucumbers we would grow to use would be ate up before I got around to making them. lol

Mine is a chicken broth base with carrots, potatoes and shredded dill pickles. My SIL found the recipe for this from another Polish restaurant that is no longer called Cracovia. I altered it a little to make it more like Crocus. Crocus has good peirogis also. They used to have a booth at Summerfest and we always had to get something there.
Pickles never last long here since the kids love pickles. But my favorite and the one I buy the most would be Milwaukee's baby dill pickles.
I like the fun little baby dills, but seldom buy them because I look at how much cheaper regular pickles are. Baby dills usually are saved for when we need a relish tray for family gatherings.
My favorites are the ones you get in restaurants or delis. They have a lighter green color and taste less sour. Claussen's are the closest thing you can find in the stores. The ones the restaurants have come from places that only sell to restaurants such as Sysco does. You've probably seen their trucks driving around.
Van Holten's aren't too bad, but they still aren't a "deli pickle." Those are the ones that come individually wrapped in a plastic pouch. You often see those at gas stations. They are made right in Waterloo so I've driven by there many times. They also make sauer kraut. Now you know why they celebrate wiener & kraut day in Waterloo.
As for making pickles, never have canned anything in my life. My mom used to make 2 kinds of pickles, neither of which I liked. One is more like a bread & butter pickle and has turmeric in it. The other was something that was aged in a big smelly crock for 5 days or whatever and then I think those were frozen, but I could be wrong. If it's not a sour dill, I won't eat it. I always hated the smell whenever she made either kind of pickle. I also hated the smell of canning tomatoes.
What's weird is that my mom never made homemade dills since that's what we ate most often. Maybe she just didn't have a good recipe to try? I dunno.

Sounds good. Think I will google and learn more about this.
I do remember 2 Polish restaurants we tried in Milwaukee before. Both were good but can't remember the names of either of them right now.
Aside from sweet baby gherkins, I like bread and butter pickles best..
I think pickle varieties are concocted to go with certain cuisines. For example, you wouldn't serve kosher dills with your bowl of Cheerios, and certainly not on your eggs.
Pickles are of the garnish family. They should be treated as such. You shouldn't eat pickles for a meal without serving something like toast or pancakes, maybe even waffles on the side. All that vinegar could lead to stomach trouble, and fast trips to the porcelain throne.
