I just got back from another trip to the super market and thought it would be fun to share our grocery lists and shopping experiences..
Do you typicaly compile a list before going to the store or do you go commando and wing it, like I do?
Some people who compile a list use the old fashioned paper and pen method couple with a coupon organizer (do you use coupons?) and other use an electronic device like
My grocery list would be way to long to put on here. lol
But I can say that every shopping trip always has ORANGE JUICE and MILK. Seems as if we go through a lot of that. Eggs too.
I would say that 1/2 my shopping I do at our Walmart Store, and then the rest I get at the grocery store. When they finish the Super Walmart I am sure I'll get most of our groceries there. Otherwise I shop at the Piggly Wiggly, or SuperValu the most and a few trips out to our Woodman's, when I really want to stock up or Sam's Club.
How often do you shop? I tend to go out every other day for something, especially if a craving hits.
I seem to have to go quite often too, so the last few weeks I've been trying to get more at one time, buy bulk, and not go as often. Saves money since if I run in for a few items it never fails a sale will be to good to pass up, or I think of something else, and next thing you know I've spent to much again.
I can't seem to go without spending at least a $20 bill, even if my intention was just to go for "a loaf of bread".. good thing I'm made of money

I go shopping when ever the mood strikes me or if we're out of something that we absolutely need right away which lately seems to be two or three times a week. We buy most of our groceries at Wal Mart but there are some things they don't sell so I go to another store in a nearby town for those. I too, shop at Aldi's when I take my mom on our monthly shopping trip in Platteville. I won't buy meat from Wal Mart as the few times I have, it smelled and tasted like bleach! Instead, I drive 45 minutes away to Fennimore and stock up on meat from their grocery store every month. They have the best meats and much cheaper than the local stores so it's well worth the drive. If we just need milk, I have my hubby pick it up at the Kwik Trip since he stops there every day for gas, etc. and their price is less than Wal Mart charges. FYI for those who have Kwik Trips in your area, I was told that they are now selling a dozen eggs for .99 cents from now on and a couple other things cheaper too although I can't remember what they were. They said they are doing it to help out those who are hurting from the bad economy.
I never buy meat from Walmart either.. we have a PriceCutter supermarket in town and I usually buy my meat there or from a small local meat processing plant that also sells to the public.
I don't make a grocery list like I used to. I used to have the whole menu planned for the week and then always made sure I tried at least one new recipe a week. That kind fell by the wayside when I went back to school and I haven't got gotten back into doing that again. I don't page through my cookbooks as much as I used to do. We tend to keep it more simple and just make sure we have enough for a few different meals to last us for the week.
I usually try to have some sense of what I need when I go in the store but temptation usually sets in and I spend more than I intended if I see a sale item or some tasty treat.
I hate grocery shopping, so I try to keep it to twice a month...I usually plan my meals and that forces me to check supplies and compile a list. I also organize the list by department (produce, canned, dairy, meat, etc.) so I can push my little cart through the store and get in and out as quickly as possible. If something looks really good, I'll throw it in the cart, or if there is a special on something I usually eat or use, I'll buy a few extra.
For stuff we run out of (milk and eggs, usually) I stop at Kwik Trip.
I'm constantly trying new recipes...trying to find SOMETHING that tastes good and is good for me. No luck so far. It seems food is either really tasty OR healthy--never both. Why is that? I take that back...this week I tried a spinach soup recipe that is actually tasty AND healthy. That's ONE out of at least 30 recipes I've tried over the last couple months. Wah!
I know what you mean about finding something is healthy and tasty. I can't find much either that is that interesting. Usually it's ok or not very good at all. Maybe you should start putting chocolate on your broccoli.
I dont enjoy grocery shopping either as some others have said. I try to do it on a "NEED to, because we are running low" basis.
I could never list all that i buy when i go. My list would be 20 times your list Dave, but i feed 3 teens, though only one lives with me.
I do most my shopping at walmart or woodmans, however i get my meat at the pick-n-save near home. walmart shoots color dye into their meat after the 2nd shelf day & again on the third, if not sold... ick, no thanks.
Aldi's doesn't carry most of the brands that i stick to, but have shopped there & will still stop by once in a blue moon (It's near my job) & usually spend a few bucks there when i do stop in.
According to my husband, who works for an ice cream company, their sales are up from the same time as last year. Other vendors are saying the same thing about chips, snacks, and frozen pizzas. However, Pepsi and Coke drivers are saying that the sale of soda is down, but most think that shoppers are going for the cheaper store brands.
Like I always say, if we didn't have to eat all the time we would be rich.
I buy a lot of our staples at our Walmart Store simply because it is usually cheaper than the grocery stores. We pick up Simply Orange Juice, eggs, 1% Milk, bread, snacks for lunches, yogurt, cereals, some can goods, pop, bottle water, chips, popcorn, etc. every week. So our 'list' rarely changes when we go shop for food at Walmart.
I mainly go to the grocery stores for Deli Foods, and fresh meat and sale items. The stores I visit the most will be our local SuperValu and the South Side Piggly Wiggly Stores. Just yesterday Ground Beef was on the list at $1.99 a pound and huge potatoes for only $3.49 for 8 pounds. They will make awesome stuffed baked potatoes. Ice Cream was on a good sale also so had to pick that up. We love to eat ice cream any time of the year. My son loves Banana flavored Milk and they finally had a good sale on that also.

.
Which of the stores do you buy the banana flavored milk at? My son loves that and our local grocery stores quit selling it here.

My son & i love it as well, never knew it was sold in stores... I just make mine with nanas, milk & a pinch of cinnamon & sugar, in my electric drink mixer... whenever in the mood, we will add a scoop or 2 of ice cream, we prefer to add chocolate chip or butter pecan.
Add some Kahlua to the banana milk and that would be a good drink. I've had the banana milk. I think Walmart might sell a powdered mix also. I don't usually buy the flavored milks because one look at all those calories and I say forget it. Hmmm, now I'm thinking that if you mix the strawberry with the banana milk, that would be really good together. I bet chocolate and banana would be good together.

lol since this is my youngest son that likes it (age 13) I guess Kahlua will not be on the list....but Strawberry and Banana Milk mixture may be an interesting option. I'll have to mention it.
