According to Wikipedia, a fritter is any kind of food coated in batter and deep fried. The word comes from the Latin *frīctūra ("frying") by way of Old French and Middle English. It can refer to a dessert, a side dish or a main course food.
Doesn't sound healthy maybe but oh so tasty!
My mom used to make us corn fritters when I was a kid and serve them with lots of corn syrup, just like pancakes. I haven't had them in years and they're sounding pretty good right about now!
Today (Dec. 2nd) is National Fritters Day, by the way. What is your favorite kind of fritter?
In France french fries are called pom frittes. That was the main fast food when I was there. Good stuff. Don't remember having fritters otherwise. Sounds good.
First time I ever heard of a 'fritter' was many years ago during my first honeymoon. We went for a week to Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. There was a place that had an all you can eat buffet, (all you can eat buffets were relatively new concept I think at that time)? Anyways, they had several different types of the best fritters ever. I actually have to say that I am not sure if I ever had any fritters since as good as I remember those tasting.
They had pineapple fritters, (my favorite), apple fritters, among several others I don't remember now. I just remember we ate a lot of food, but I think I filled up on the fritters the most. lol
Dave, hot dog fritters?? Think it should be left as just, corn dogs. lol
And I love Lake of the Ozarks but I love Grand Lake (Grove, Oklahoma) and Lake Taneycomo (Branson, Missouri) more. Stockton Lake in Missouri is nice too.
I prefer the Great Lakes tho.. lived on or near Lake Ontario for over 30 years. Had a cabin in the 1000 Islands as a kid.. beautifully situated atop a cliff overlooking the St. Lawrence Seaway.
I had a friend from Maine insist once there was no such thing as hush puppies.. he said he'd never heard of them or had one! I can recall getting hush puppies alot served with fish fries.. Love 'em!
Here's an interesting take on the possible origin of hush puppies:
Come to think of it, the last time I went to the chinese buffet, they had little dough nuggets filled with corn niblets and the woman that I was with loved them.. not the corn fritters I'm used to but fit the description above.

Sounds like you have been many places in your lifetime Dave. You will have to start a topic sometime listing all the places you have lived or visited...and ask others where they have been.
Back on subject, I forgot about corn fritters...they are really great too.
To be honest I've lived (or visited) so many places, I can't even remember all the places , uh, I've eaten corn fritters.
In New York alone, I lived in Greater Rochester, Hilton, Greece, Albion, Medina, Hamlin, Ithaca, and Syracuse to name a few.
Florida: Greater Miami, Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Opa Locka, Hialeah, Carol City, Hollywood.
And etc., etc. I've probably lived over 100 different places easy and visited most of the US. Places in Canada and Mexico.
This last few years is the longest I've lived anywhere.
Always one step ahead of the Corn Fritter police.
