Make your own microwave popcorn

Microwave popcorn is really convenient but it can put a dent in the monthly food budget.
Try making your own. Take a half cup of regular popcorn kernels, and pour them into a paper lunch bag, tightly fold the top over twice, and pop on high until it pops no more (set for 2–3 minutes and then listen). Add your own seasoning and fat (be easy on the fat) and enjoy.

Popcorn is a whole grain. It is recommended that we consume 6 servings of whole grains daily, but be careful of your caloric intake.

Re: Make your own microwave popcorn

What an interesting idea! My kids eat a ton of popcorn.
I was wondering, can you put the salt and maybe a small amount of butter in the bag before you pop it, like you get when you buy butter popcorn for microwaves?

Also, the bags microwave popcorn comes in is much thicker than a paper lunch bag, won't the heat from the hot kennels burn the thinner paper lunch bag?

I pop any microwave popcorn by listening. When you can count to 1-one thousand, 2-one thousand, 3-one thousand with no pops, it's done. Usually few unpopped kernels by then, and if you let it cook longer, good chance you'll get burnt corn.

Nice post, MrKhay. I'm looking forward to the answers to pk's post, too.

Keith

Re: Make your own microwave popcorn

add the fat and seasoning after you pour the popcorn into a bowl. As far as the bag burning...I'm not sure the kernels get that hot.

Run a test, and post the results here.

Anxiously awaiting the test results....

We got out the old popcorn air popper a week ago and that's been very good.

Sorry, I keep forgetting to buy paper lunch bags! It's just something I never think of when shopping. My kids have lunch boxes and never need bags except for plastic sandwich/snack ones. I will try to get some soon and try this.

A paper grocery bag might be the right gauge of paper. It may be too large...maybe cut it down...you're a creative sort, PK

Re: Make your own microwave popcorn

Of course!!! Why didn't I think of a paper grocery bag. If you think about it a lunch bag would be really small and thin I would think. OK, now that's my goal this week is to prepare paper bag popcorn. .. just have to get some seeds now.

Re: Make your own microwave popcorn

OK, it makes great popcorn.

I used Orville Redenbacher's seeds. I used a grocery bag cut down less then 1/2 size. I put 2/3 cups seeds in. It popped for about 3 minutes. Melted butter and salt and put on while in bowl. yummm.

I think a lunch bag and 1/2 cup would work best. And make sure you really, really tighten the bag. Mine came open and it was really fun to watch. It was like the silly shows where the person puts to much soap in the washer and suds goes all over the place. Well popcorn popped all over the microwave. I opened the door and had popcorn falling out on me. But if it had stayed inside the bag it would have filled it perfectly.

Well, my son just asked for more. Guess it passed the test here.

Thanks for adding this recipe on and sharing it with us.

lol I just said something about you being our bubbler chef on another post!

Well, now someone else has to try the popcorn and let us know how they like it and if they came up with something to add to it....and make sure you pass the bowl along to the rest of us! I was to selfish and did not do that last night. Sorry! lol

I just checked and there is still some left in the big bowl if anyone wants it.

Nice job on a mission accomplished, Patti,
What was the ratio of popped to unpopped kernels? How much was burnt?
Bag size is something that must be perfected. I think a lunch bag would be too flimsy and too small. The grocery bag would have to be sealed and folded in a similar fashion as that of a bag of manufactured MWPC (microwave pop corn). An even and consistent heat to moisture ratio is crucial and must be controlled in popcorn production.

This may be an interesting experiment. Let's try some others.
