Plan to start eating healthy? One rule of thumb is "Short Is Better" for a healthy diet.
By this we mean read those ingredients labels! The shorter the label, the less chance it's filled with unwanted additives. Less additives equals healthier eating!
It's true! Try checking a can of canned spinach, for example.. chances are the only additive you'll see besides water is salt (for flavor).
Follow the "Short Is Better" guideline and you'll be eating healthier in no time!
Re: Healthy Diet? Natural Food - Great Nutrition advice
Which brings to mind, "Short is good, but raw is often better"! In fact I recently read an article about a woman who lost half her body weight by eating raw in preference to processed foods.
I'm with you tho, Keith.. eating healthy one word food products can be an expensive proposition..
I wonder how many prefer so-called healthy foods, taste-wise? Not many would actually prefer a rice cake to a bagel smothered in cream cheese I'll bet! And I actually prefer most canned or frozen vegetables to fresh.

As much as I like bagels smothered in cream cheese I actually do like rice cakes too. I do smear a small amount of low fat peanut butter on it and usually it has to be the apple cinnamon kind. Really good.
Nothing beats the taste of fresh corn scraped off the cob, or fresh tomatoes, peas, etc. But if we are talking frozen over can I will say I generally like frozen anytime EXCEPT green beans. They are much better in a can than frozen.
Yes, sometimes. When you look at the cost per ounce of heavily processed foods (candy, cookies, etc.), they are MUCH higher than the costs per ounce of apples, potatoes, tomatoes, etc.
It's sad that when I buy only 'healthy' foods my grocery bill is always much higher.
Isn't that terrible? When we buy enough vegetables to make a stir fry, it ends up costing more than getting Chinese take-out. Pizza Hut's pasta trays are cheaper than getting all the raw materials to do a pasta bake. No wonder people eat junk. Being healthy is expensive!
When you are in a huge hurry, tired, don't want to stop at the store to buy groceries, or just want to go home and eat fast without cooking...well, it's called McDonald's or Wendy's. What is the cheapest? The junk food portion of the menu.
A double cheeseburger, fry and small coke. 3.00 plus tax.
A nice Wendy's salad, (BLT salad is my favorite), and a ice tea is over 5.00 plus tax.
Even if you went with the baked potato and chicken nuggets (2.00 at Wendy's) it's still much cheaper than a salad or a fruit bowl.
Taco Bell (my favorite fast food place) fatty ground beef taco is cheaper than the chicken taco which is better for you.
I noticed one of KFC's latest promotions included pointing out that you can't buy all the ingredients of their family meal for the same price they provide it for. The question is: is take out or home cooking healthier? I'd opt for home cooking (if KFC weren't so darn tasty, that is!)..
And speaking of stir fry.. while I love it, I can't afford even a prepackaged stir fry at $5 to $7 when I can go to a buffet and pay the same price for that and more.
Neighbors cooperating to purchase vegetables (and more) in bulk may be the answer.

Burger King
Mushroom and Swiss Steakhouse Burger, large frys, (which aren't as large as they used to be) and a large drink: $6.65.
If I ever have trouble with movement, I head over to McDonald's and work down a half dozen or so of their regular cheeseburgers.
Seeing as our theme for next week is Health and Fitness, thought I'd kick this up as a reminder that eating healthy goes hand in hand with good exercise.
We were just talking about this the other day.. saw a commercial for having some diet plan foods sent directly to your home. I remarked that even if the foods were "cheap" (which they weren't), they'd kill ya on s&H..
