Onions, no more crying?

Here is a story I just read that makes me excited. Finally a discovery that led to a development of an onion that will not produce tears when you cut it. I don't know about others but I will certainly enjoy this. I will say I don't have a big love for onions to start with but I do understand it is necessary to add them for flavor. But to cut them and dice them up sometimes becomes way to much. lol I know I for one will certainly check this out when it hits the grocery stores. .... Now if they can just figure out a way to cut them without the smell!

Anyways, enjoy the article:

Scientists create 'no tears' onions

Scientists in New Zealand and Japan have created a "tear-free" onion using biotechnology to switch off the gene behind the enzyme that makes us cry, one of the leading researchers said Friday.
The discovery could signal an end to one of cooking's eternal puzzles: why does cutting up a simple onion sting the eyes and trigger teardrops?

Re: Onions, no more crying?

I like to use that chopper that Pampered Chef carries for my onions. I can dice or chop up a onion with no tears.

I also like the slicer that pampered chef carries. I use that when I want slices of onions. Works great.

This chopper is great. As you chop, the product is contained in a cup. No mess. It twists apart for fast easy washing too.

Re: Onions, no more crying?

I learned these two, to help with the smell and tears have a candle burning next to where you are chopping or put the onion in the freezer for a couple hours before your ready to cut.
