Food pyramid: An option for better eating

The food pyramid came into existence in the 1960's after a startling rise in incidents of heart disease. The U.S Department of Agriculture devised a guide to healthy meals that would include the proper portions of meat, cereals, vegetables and fruits, dairy products, and fatty foods. There are officially 5 food groups.

A Pattern for Daily Food Choices, the USDA’s food guide, was being published annually since the 1980’s. However, people were still not aware that it existed.

Beginning in 1988, the creation of a graphic to represent the food groups started. It needed to convey the three main ideas: variety, proportionality and moderation. The Food Guide Pyramid was finally released in 1992. Both the graphics and text conveyed variety and proportionality (by pictures of foods and the size of the food group).

On every food in the grocery store is a nutritional label. That was put into effect in 1994 by the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act. Now, Americans can follow the Food Guide Pyramid easily.

But, Americans remain confused about healthy eating. A 1996 telephone done by the USDA found that over 40 percent of people agreed with the statement “There are so many recommendations about healthy ways to eat, it’s hard to know what to believe.”

Because of the emergence of so many diets and programs, it will be challenging to Americans to know just what to believe. It seems as if the information we hear is changing every day.

You can go to this site to create your own personal eating plan with the foods and amounts that are right for you.

I have done this myself and hopefully I see better results, (only about 25lbs needed to loose) but you must add exercise to the equation too to make any so called plan to work.

The food pyramid seems to change from time to time. After I quit smoking cigarettes, I noticed my trousers were fitting a bit to tight for comfort. I went out and bought new ones that were 4" larger in the waist. I was having trouble walking in the 32 inch'ers. I ate right, and walking was easier. I managed to get back to "fighting" weight (the weight I was when I quit smoking). The thing that baffled me was, the old trousers were still tight and uncomfortable. I guess the my body mass shifted to the right places.
I walked between 10-20 miles daily. This worked out well for me.

The Food Pyramid is out. The first lady needed to spend the taxpayers money on making a "Food Plate" instead. The "Food Plate" basically says the same thing as the Food Pyramid, except there's no desert.

That graphic is too confusing, or else I just can't see it.

Michelle Obama needs to find something to do with her time, besides going on vacation. Just what is she "vacating" from. Maybe the definition of "vacation" changed from taking time off from the grind, to doing nothing somewhere other than home/work.

I don't feel any dumber!
