Cooking Magazines

What cooking magazines are theBubbler members reading?

I've been a Taste of Home subscriber for years, and I've also gotten other TOH family publications like Light & Tasty and Quick Cooking. I like their recipes but lately I feel like a lot of the recipes taste the same.

I got a free copy of Cooking at Home in the mail and I loved it! It's similar to Cooks Illustrated but not as expensive. They have classic recipes but they also get into cooking equipment and techniques. I'm thinking of subscribing to this one.

I got Rachael Ray's cooking magazine for a while but she gets a little... sickening? Paula Dean's magazine is a hoot but if I ate southern dishes that often I'd have a heart attack!

I really like the free Food and Family magazine from Kraft. It highlights Kraft products, of course, but their recipes are really easy. These Baked Crab Rangoon are awesome.

What magazines do you recommend?

Re: Cooking Magazines

I subscribe to Taste of Home. I discovered this magazine at the chiropractors office. I was paging through the recipes, and had all to do to keep the drool off of my chin!

I also subscribe to Cooking for 2, and Light & Tasty, all three from Reiman Publications of Glendale Wisconsin.

How do you feel about the Reiman (now Reader's Digest) publications having ads in them? Seeing a Bush's Beans ad in the last Taste of Home was weird! If they get as cluttered as some of the other magazines I read, I may reconsider my subscriptions.

I have a large collection of cookbooks from very old to modern. I use to love collecting them and finding interesting things to make. But since I discovered Taste of Home cookbooks/magazines I was totally hooked. Not sure if I ever made something that wasn't great to eat.

But ads? I missed the last few issues and haven't seen ads in yet. This will be really strange. The one thing they always prided themselves in was the fact that they had NO ADS. Too bad greed always gets in the way of great things and this new company that now owns it has to feel they have to change a great thing. Maybe they will be wise and just put a few ads in or perhaps make the last few pages where the ads fit so it won't mess with the flow of the magazine as we know it?

Re: Cooking Magazines

Seems my copy of "Taste of Home" magazine doesn't have the advertising you refer to. Other than the inserts that ask me to subscribe to some of their other publications.

I enjoy Taste of Home's "Cupcake of the Week" emailing. I don't eat alot of cupcakes, but I get to see some of the other cooks/bakers ideas.

I have noticed that when using recipe sites such as from Kraft Foods, or Sargento, etc., they like to advise using "Sargento Low Fat Shredded Mozzarella" where the recipe could just say "Low Fat Shredded Mozzarella".

I'd like to see a cooks jokes section in one of those magazines.

Re: Cooking Magazines

The only ad I've seen in TOH so far was a Bush's Beans ad in the last issue. It was certainly relevant. I have less issue with relevant ads than say, make-up ads in a cooking magazine.

When I get a magazine, the first thing I do is pull out every page that is double-sided with ads. You'd be amazed at how little content there is in a magazine once the ads are yanked out!

Has anyone gone to a Taste of Home cooking school or the annual expo in Milwaukee? I went to the expo once. Holy cow. I thought mosh pits were violent... they're nothing compared to senior citizens scrambling over free samples of Spam!

Re: Cooking Magazines

My favorite lately is Everyday with Rachael Ray.. it's a great mix of household and cooking tips, plus Rachael and I seem to have similar cooking styles (not a lot of strict measurements and a lot of experimentation).

Just got the February 2010 issue today .. I particularly like the 30 minute meals section. Lots of great photos too!

Re: Cooking Magazines

I use Maghound to order magazines normally not available free. Maghound allows you to order a selection of magazine subscriptions and pay a single monthly price, similar to Netflix (without having to return anything) but for magazines instead of videos. You can also change magazines as often as you like.

Re: Cooking Magazines

I don't currently get any cooking magazines unless I see something in the book store that I must have. I used to get Taste of Home Quick Cooking, but then I got so many recipes that I needed to stop and I still haven't tried them all. I always clipped out the recipes I wanted and glued them in a binder with plastic sleeves to keep the pages clean from food spills.

I still love to grab a stack of cooking magazines when at the book store. I also love to page through those Pillsbury and other little books found by the checkouts at stores.

Cooking magazines.. I love to flip thru them for ideas if nothing else.. I do most of the cooking because I'm a control freak, lol.. but so far, no one has complained about the taste of my food!

Most of the time I cook without using a recipe but still I have a huge love for cooking magazines and cook books. It's strange how you can look through years of them and yet the next new one out there just makes you want to buy it and bring it home to check it out. lol Ever wonder how there can be so many ways to make the same foods?

Then go online and look for even more recipes. I've gotten a lot from there also. Great when looking for that hard to find recipe or those copycat recipes of your favorite restaurants.

I do have a number of recipes for both. I could go for some meatloaf again. That's my husband's favorite I think. He orders it often when we go out to eat. I tasted it many times in restaurants, but it never compares to any homemade ones I've tried. Why is that?

My 17 year old daughter has been doing a lot of the cooking lately and she is really good at it. We have been trying alot of new things out of the last few Taste of Home magazines I've picked up. Usually can't go wrong with anything from Taste of Home.

Re: Cooking Magazines

All their magazines are good. I used to get Quick Cooking, which I think is called something like Simple & Delicious now.

Now I just go online and find lots of recipes that I print out. I have a template set up that I copy and paste them into so they all are the same size when I'm done. I look through food blogs, which have lots of great pictures and other recipe sites. Going on StumbleUpon looking at recipes is dangerous. I have way too many now. Many involve desserts...why is that?
