Carniceria Mexicano
El Rey Carniceria Mexicano on Cesar E. Chavez Drive (was formerly 16th Street) is arguably the heart of Milwaukee's Mexican community. This is the original El Rey -- since the popularity is so high there are now two other locations of this grocery -- and it's usually packed and bustling with people of all races, the narrow aisles are being serenaded with the soft cadences of Spanish voices and music. The place offers a wide variety of authentic Mexican products and cuisine. The bakery "God Forbid you even enter trust me you won't want to leave" and food cases are stuffed with "homemade" and fabulously tasty authentic Mexican fare. The grocery store features Mexican mouth watering tortilla chips, and nowhere will you find a better salsa selection, carne (meat), verduras (produce), liquor, jugo (juice), queso (cheese), cerveza (beer), and as well a huge selection of packaged goods reflecting Mexico's world-renowned cuisine. This is a must shop tienda!
The store also has a small very authentic fast food tortilla stand:
A lunch and dinner counter in back features Mexican-American standards like tacos, burritos, sopa, arroz y frijoles.
Don't worry employees here do understand enough english to be of assistance!

Milwaukee Journal May 6, 2007
Nearly 30 years ago, the Villarreal family took a chance and opened a Mexican grocery store on S. 16th St., becoming the only Latino business on the street in the south side neighborhood.
Since then, Milwaukee's Latino community has flourished and spread beyond the city's south side. The Villarreal family continued to expand along with it. The Villarreals have added other stores, a tortilla factory and a line of salsa and other Mexican products. In the process, they have become one of the state's largest and most successful Latino businesses.

A crash course in Mexico's varied cuisine
MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- A soft flour tortilla stuffed with melted Chihuahua cheese and fresh squash blossoms. Chili- and chocolate-laden mole draped over succulent chicken breasts. Spit-roasted-pork tacos topped with pineapple, onion and cilantro.
Whether you crave quesadillas, tamales and tortillas, cheese-filled chilies and black beans or dried beef and broiled goat, a tasting tour through Mexico City's rich variety of traditional and often-surprisingly contemporary flavors will leave you sated.
Though Mexican food differs widely by region, samples of nearly all of the country's cuisines can be found in this chaotic capital of 8 million people where two-hour weekday lunches and hours-long weekend family dinners remain the norm.

I love Mexican Food!! I have shopped at El Ray's a few times. Have not been there since they moved.
I've been looking for a good enchillada recipe. The one I use is so basic, good, but I know there is something better out there.

I think I can help with that; my sister and I both have wonderful Latin b/f who have taught us how to cook in the kitchen. Many times our Mexican food has been commented from other Hispanics on a job well done. Plus there never is left over either. Gobbled right down! Not sure if we have written down yet how we prepare the enchiladas which is traditional style, I'll have to double check later. I'd be happy to submit the recipe.

Our children went through elementary school with a duo language program. (kenosha school of language). We often had pot lucks or festivals where everyone brought food. We all had a wonderful time eating all the different foods that everyone would bring in!
Wow...now I have a craving...lol
