To Put Out a Cooking Fire in Your Kitchen

1. Call the fire department immediately. In many cases, dialing 9-11 will give you Emergency Services.
2.Carefully slide a pan lid over the flames to smother a grease or oil fire, then turn off the heat and leave the lid in place until the pan cools. Never carry the pan outside.
3.Extinguish other food fires with baking soda. Never use water or flour on cooking fires.
4. Keep the oven door shut and turn off the heat to smother the an oven or broiler fire.
5. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Be sure you have the correct type, and training.
6. Keep a working smoke detector in your home, and test it monthly.

These tips/advice was copied from a National Association of Fire Marshals brochure, in cooperation with the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, and The National Safety Council.

Fire Extinguisher : 101

Location, location, location! Having a fire extinguisher is one thing, having it handy in case of an emergency, is another.

Fire extinguisher in kitchen. It is recommended to have at least one fire extinguisher on each floor of your home. Also, keep them in plain sight and no more than five feet above the floor. Do not put them in closets because that will cost you valuable time when you are reaching for it. And even though a fire extinguisher may not match your décor, do not put it behind curtains or drapes.

The most important places to have a fire extinguisher are in areas that are more susceptible to fire. These areas are the kitchen and the garage.

Kitchen: According to U.S. Fire Administration statistics, the kitchen is the place where fires most often start. If you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, most grease fires can be contained. Do not put the fire extinguisher near the stove as it will be out of your reach if the fire is on the stovetop. You should not have to risk burns just to reach your extinguisher. Therefore, the best place to put the fire extinguisher is by the door of the kitchen so you have easy access to it.

Garage: It is a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher here because in most homes, this is the place we use as storage. Often, leftover paints, solvents, and building materials will be piled up without a second thought. Again, the best location to mount the fire extinguisher is by the door.

TRUE STORY....

Back about 10 or 15 years ago when Carol and I lived in Milwaukee, I was out in the front yard with a friend cutting up a tree when the neighbor lady (Not the smartest person on the block  ) Comes running over and says, "Can you help me!!!" "My stove is on fire". We run into her house and her very small children that she left in the house to come out and look for help are standing in the kitchen watching it burn 8O She had opened the oven door letting the fire escape  So I yell to my buddy to call the fire dept. And she is yelling NO just put the fire out!!! Well I was able to get the kids out of her house even with her fighting me cause it was cold out  and then actually got the fire out with baking soda and a few wet towles. Turned out she was cooking a pot roast in a plastic bowl in the oven 8O She seemed to think "micro-wave safe" was oven safe!!! Believe it or not, I helped put out another fire there a year later. I wonder if that house is still standing
