Red Cross To Close Portage Office
Office's Only Employee Was Laid Off
PORTAGE, Wis. -- In the wake of budgetary concerns and a loss of financial support from its donors, the American Red Cross Badger Chapter said it will be closing its Portage branch office by the end of June.
When the office closes, it'll be the first time in nearly 40 years that Columbia County will be without a local American Red Cross office.
"We're looking to control costs as much as we can, and to do that we've had to make some difficult decisions," said Tom Mooney, of the Badger Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The closing of the Portage branch means the sole employee, Pam Oxman, is out of a job.
"It was never mentioned that the job was going to be gone, too. They kept on reassuring me that the job would stay open," Oxman said.
This week, Oxman found out that she would be let go. She has been running the office for five and a half years.
