I've just started collecting marbles and have accumulated maybe a couple thousand since I started a couple months ago. Most of mine are newer machine made marbles (1970's to date) that I've picked up in lots at the flea market for a few dollars here and there..
Thought this was an interesting video that answered my question regarding how they're made:
When I was a kid we had one of the wooden marble tracks where the marbles rolled back and forth until they reached the bottom. We would keep sending marbles down it until the track was completely full. I tried to find a picture of one, but none were quite the same thing.
Then you always needed marbles for playing Chinese checkers. My brother almost always beat me in that game and a lot of others.

I've got 4 big jars of marbles .. paid $12 for a jar of marbles yesterday and got some nice ones. Always looking on eBay for big lots of marbles to add to my collection.
We had Kerplunk when we were kids. My parents still might have it. I may need to go back over there to find more stuff to sell on ebay. They have some really old games, even ones from my grandparents.
Check the completed listings for old marbles at eBay or check Bonanzle for marbles to get some sense of what's what.. marbles, marble games, marble literature.
This site specializes in marble auctions but here is an example listing to show that marble related items can be worth money as well:
I remember way back in 6th Grade..(yes, I actually can remember back that far! lol). We use to love to play marbles on the playground. I had a leather blue and white marble bag with a drawstring and all my 'special' marbles in it. Somewhere amongst all my old things I bet I still have that marble bag tucked away with some of my old marbles.
