I had a friend in the service many years ago who collected stamps. A very smart and pragmatic fellow, I asked his secret because of the size of his collection - huge!

This fellow bought whole sheets of stamps on their issue date. He bought two. He also got an envelope with the stamp canceled on the issue date. Two actually.

After a year, the second set had already become quite valuable. Always worth twice as much, often worth 3, 4, 5 or more times the original (postage value) cost.

So, after one year he sold his second sets and that financed his further collections ad infinitum!

I always thought that was a slick plan.
