La Belle Cemetery located in Oconomowoc, Waukesha County is location of a granite statute of a young woman standing near a cross. The story is told that sometimes an apparition of the girl is seen walking from the statute and drowning herself in the nearby Lake Fowler. Others have said to have seen her come to life and walk into Lac LaBelle (which is some distance away). It has also been told that the hands on the statue sometimes drip blood.
When visiting the cemetery, one finds the Surname Nathusius carved on the statue. Directly in front of the statue are buried:
Father Carl (1830-1921)
Mother Louise (1832-1917)
Brother Wilhelm (1865-1945)
Daughter Carolina (1865-1952)

That's eerie! I have grandparents buried in this cemetery and I recall hearing this story many, many years ago! Anyone else with info, please post! I'll subscribe to this thread!
Well, i've been to it. I have a friend who hunts ghosts and well there are about 4 different stories in the graveyard but i bet there are thousands more. It's said because it's a public graveyard that it obviously has ghosts, well it does. When I'm there i always have this eerie feeling, like there are so many emotions circled around one place. At the statue of y Mary (thats the one you mentioned) you feel sort of said and out of sorts, the statue is beautiful. It's said that she jumped off the bridge at the enterance and killed herself. She is seen wandering the graves, and there hasnt been many accounts of the supposed , but in photographs and if you just notice, her eyes turn black. It becomes very cold when you are by her grave. My friend was there with his car all the way off and keys were in his pocket, his cars engine turned on and revved, the lights flashed and it was over. In the pictures there are orbs and her eyes are black.
The other story is of the "Anchor Lady". She's the one seen drowning herself in the pond dealio in the cemetery. It's said that she tied an anchor tied around her leg and she carries it to the pond and lowers herself in and eventually dies of suffocation. We could not get a clear picture at her grave, three camera's were used in case of tampering. Including a digital camera. My friend felt like a cold hand went up her leg and i felt so cold and disturbed. She is a creepy statue and ghost to tell you the truth.
There is also the moving cript and the opened cript. I'm not sure because I've never seen it, but we found the one it was supposed to be and nothing happened.
Also in the direct center there is a cript of a person with the surname Khol. I'd say that was the hardest for me to stand by. It frightened me to no end. You just felt something by it. There is no story on it, but you could tell that it was different at the grave.
At certain points in the cemetery you feel different emotions, some points i felt so sad i was nearly in tears, others i was peaceful. And like at the anchor lady and y mary i felt like i could almost relate and this sort of sad depression feeling along with amazement was sort of on me. Then there are places where its like you get really angry and testy, and i had another spot where i felt total and utter contentment.
I was hyped about going there the first time. I had no idea about the stories or anything until we got in there and they told me why they brought me. The second i drove across the bridge i got a twitchy sort of feeling like i didnt belong there.
I honestly believe it is haunted, and living near it has let me experience the stories. I highly recommend visiting it, at least either in the daytime or sundown, i do not recommend though going at night unless you are positive you want to see a ghost, since that is when it is said you see y mary and anchor lady.
When I was a kid I would go to that cemetary with my friends just to see that statue. We used to put make-up on it and then next thing you know it wasn't there. There's this strange feeling you get just by looking at the statue. It is beautiful but there's something haunting about it.
i went there just last weekend and it was a creepy cemetery at night. I heard that the statue has had different stances, either her head up or her feet on different steps. I grabbed a flyer from the cemetery before i left and the picture of her in the flyer was in a different position than she actually was when i was there. So that was weird. Then i went to the top of the hill where there was one of those houses where they keep the people and on the top of it was my last name.I was like OH MY GOD!!! that was so creepy. Most likely coincidental, but very weird!!! i took a digital recorder and asked questions and listened to it after and i got some kind of voices on it. I dont know if there were real but i know i didnt say anything. I definetly want to go back and stay at night for a while and see if anything happens.
i've heard of this story many times!! A lot of teenagers play pranks in the cemetery and end up drawing w/ markers on the statues face and hands...so it only looks like blood. Do you know of any other hauntings in Oconomowoc?

Yea actually theres 2 more hauntings in Oconomowoc. One haunting is in the Oconomowoc highschool that a young boy hung himself in the lower gym and has been haunting the gym for years on Halloween.
the other haunting is on Fowler lake. In the year 2003 it was told that an old man was out fishing on his boat at about sunset one evening, and it was thought that he either had a heart attack or it was something else, but he had fallen over the side of his fishing boat. It is said that he still haunts that lake every evening at sunset.

I have heard a story behind this legend not quite sure if its true or not but I live in Oconomowoc not far from it. Sometime soon hopefully my friend and I is going to go over there. I'll post more when I do it and I'll see if i can post some pictures if there of any interests.

I look back at some people who posted their only post, or one of just a couple of posts, here at theBubbler and I think this ghostly haunting story is what drew them.
The family is the Nathusius family. The Statue is an angel, whose eyes occasionally rust after a hard winter. The family owned a tavern/restaurant in the late 1890's-1900's in Oconomowoc. There was no suicide or drowning. Just a myth. But that legend was featured in the book Weird Wisconsin. If anyone is doing genealogy on the Nathusius family, contact the Oconomowoc Historical Society.

I live in O-town and no one talks about either of those hauntings. No one ever drowned in 2003, and there has never been a suicide at OHS.

i can't speak for the fowler lake one, but i just graduated from OHS this summer and through the years ive been there nothing weird has happened durring halloween... sure ive heard the story... but either that ghost found peace or that one was a hoax
with the cemetary, my friend has a knack for these ghosty things, and there's a tombstonethat the girl's name is elizabeth and her brother is engraved on the same tombstone.. i think she was like... 13? and he was any age between less than a year and 4... i don't remember... well that girl like directly haunted my friend for some years... and would physically choke her and stuff... it was scary ****... but idk if she made amends with her or something, but im telling you be nice to that grave and don't mess with her...
I apologizi in advance for how long my post is, but it is an incredible story.
Me and four of my friends (Dan, Zach, Mike, and Noel) visited this cemetery on Saturday, July 25, around 10:30 and stayed for about 45 minutes. As semi-professional ghost hunters (even though we're all around 17 years old) we came equipped with two Sony infrared cameras, both equipped with external infrared lights, a digital camera, a Sony voice recorder, and an emf detector.
Unlike everyone else's blog, we didn't experience much by the statue, but rather when walking around the other parts of the cemetery. Early on, I admitted right away that I had a very eerie feeling from the moment we walked in. Everyone thought that I was crazy at first until they started to feel things too.
We found the statue right away and I explained the story and background of it to my fellow investigators. After about 10 minutes of no activity, we decided to leave the emf detector and the voice recorder on the statue, and one of the infrared cameras filming the statue. We continued to walk around during which my friend Zach said he saw a glowing, floating light pacing back and forth. As he was pointing it out, I managed to catch a glimpse of it before it disappeared into thin air. We managed to get a picture of it before it disappeared. It looks like a tiny orange glow off in the distance.
We then circled around and came back to the statue to check up on everything and make sure nothing fell over (the infrared camera was awkwardly balanced on another headstone). What happens next is one of the most frightening paranormal experiences I have ever faced. After looking at the statue and asking questions for another two or three minutes, we started to walk away from the statue on the path running parallel to Fowler Lake. After a few minutes of walking, I took notice to an odd shadow on the right side of the path. The lake is also on the right side and that night the moon was above the lake, so the moon was casting shadows from the headstones on the right side and was casting a shadow between the headstones and the path for each headstone.
As we were walking, about 50 feet away, I noticed that one of the shadows was darker than the other ones. I kept my eye on it as we got closer, and when we were about 15 or 20 feet away, a small child-like figure rose out of the shadow, from a crouching to a standing position, and darted across the path and disappeared on the left side of the path, all in a matter of one or two seconds. Needless to say I was extremely startled. I ran over to where I saw it but could not explain why that happened. We then kept on following the trail until it ended. We then turned back and stayed at the statue again for a few minutes and then gathered our things and headed out. Right before we exited the gates, we all heard a very loud noise come from behind us that sounded like two metal objects banging together. This we could also not explain. A
fter returning home from a 25 minute drive (We live in Waukesha) we all shared stories of our experiences. In addition to the light that Zach and I saw, the child figure, and the loud bang at the end, we also heard two interesting stories from Mike and Noel, both quite disturbing. After we turned back from the long path right after I saw that figure, on our way back, at that exact same spot, Mike admitted to seeing the exact same thing as I did at the same spot, but didn’t want to say anything because he didn’t want to frighten my girlfriend Noel, whom we could all tell was frightened enough already, but we didn’t find out why until after we got back to my house. She is usually pretty talkative, but between after I saw the figure to when we gathered our stuff and left, she was unusually quiet. She told us that when we were walking back to the statue for the last time after we turned around, she noticed a glow in the distance on the right side of the path. This is when I noticed that she was starting to get quiet. She said that as we got closer she could make out a face, and as we got even closer she was sure it was a face, there was no doubt in her mind. She said she was so scared that she couldn’t even speak. She kept on looking away and glancing at it in hopes that it would go away, but it kept on looking at her. As we passed it and came within 15 feet of it, it was still looking at her. As we started to head away from it, she turned around to see if it was gone yet, and at this time, it turned and faced her, grinned at her, and disappeared. She was quite disturbed for the rest of that night and had trouble sleeping.
When we returned home, we watched the tapes from both of the infrared cameras. First we watched the one that I was holding the whole time and didn’t catch anything even though I was hoping to catch that figure, but the night vision just isn’t strong enough…now on to the camera taping the statue.
I have to explain something before I go on any further. We understand that there is a fairly large town about a mile away from the cemetery, but peoples voices would not be able to clearly carry that far, and we heard no other voices at the time of walking around other than ours. About ten minutes after we set the camera down and started walking around, the camera’s microphone picked up a very loud, clear, and disturbing scream, which sounds like a high pitch voice and a low pitch voicecombining into one voice. I hate to say this being a religious person, but it sounds like a demonic voice.
Then, to make it even more frightening, about five minutes later on the tape, again a very loud and clear voice, but instead of a scream, this time it was a laugh. The voice sounded like a different voice this time, almost like an older female’s voice, but equally as chilling. Anyone who wants to see the picture of the glow or here the wav file of the scream or the laugh, email me at ghosthunter728@yahoo.com.
This place is extraordinary, all five of us can say that without a doubt. If you live in southeastern Wisconsin…never mind. If you live anywhere, and you’re eager to experience the paranormal for yourself and you’re willing to travel far, I would recommend it; just make sure you get permission from the local law enforcement first. We will go back there soon to try to gather more evidence and experience more with the infamous statue: try to see if its hands bleed and if we can see it move. I am open to any comments or stories of your own. Until next time, goodbye. Happy ghost hunting!

So Ghosthunter, could you give me your opinion on what this might be in the photo I took of my sister at Arrowhead Campground in Wisconsin Dells last week? She had lit the fire about 15 minutes prior to the picture and nothing like it showed up in any of the other pictures that were taken that day. It gave us all goosebumps when we saw it on the camera! One sister said it looked like it might be her guardian angel or something. It just really freaked us all out!
Could it be smoke from another campfire that the wind just blew over? Or old smoke/ash/dust lifted from under your logs? Otherwise if I am correct in the name, I think this is what could be taken as 'orbs'? Not sure if that is what they are called.

There weren't any other campfires going. Their campsite is kind of remote and is at the end of the campground. All of the other pictures I took that day didn't show any smoke coming from the campfire at all which I thought was kind of weird to begin with. I found it kind of strange that what ever it is was just around her...kind of like it was protecting her or something. Besides there was no wind or breeze and doesn't smoke usually rise anyhow?
