Has anyone found a good way to keep a kitten off the counter, TV stand, bed, you name it? Our new kitten is awful! The other two never wanted to sit on the counter all the time, but this one won't stop! We've tried putting pepper on the counter and spritzing him with water when we catch him, but it doesn't help.
He is also a sneak and tries to steal people food. Again, our other two never do this! Help!
Take a few empty soda cans and put a few pennies in them. Tape over the hole in the top of the can. Next, place some cans all around the edge of your counter. When your kitten jumps up, she/he should knock the cans all over the place. Most cats aren't very fond of loud noises. Cans full of pennies crashing to the ground is usually enough deterrent to keep your cat away from high places for a while. Be sure always to keep your counter clean and the kitten will feel less of a chance to explore.
Also have a simiular container with pennies or such near areas you don't want the kitten on or near. Note, you may need to change out the item as the cat gets older because they begin to get use to that nosie.
I have a small shaker box by my computer becuase my cat always wants attention in front of my screen.
I shake the box and goodbye kitty. This works well all over the house.
Another trick I learned from my mom is if you have cat who like to escape when you open your door in or out, a simple idea.
When you enter or leave your home, have your keys ready took shake them loosely in the air. You cat will scatter fast and give you time to enter or leave.
I find this usefull while bringing grocerys in the house.
Thanks for the ideas! I think the noisy cans on the counter may help. I have to start drinking soda so I can collect the cans. You also made a good point about keeping the counters clean. We let mail pile up and I think the kitten may be trying to bed down in it!
If you don't like all the noise of the cans falling,, and waking you up in the middle of the night,,, they make these samll electric pads, looks like a heating pad, that you plug in, and when the cat/dog, jumps up on the table, counter, couch, where ever, they get a mild shock,, like a static shock, and they learn to stay off of whatever it is you put it on.
Check with Petsmart or Petco, they should have them.
Doesn't hurt them,, just startles them enough to make them rethink getting up there.
An update on the terrible kitten... he is still terrible and now a year old! We tried pepper on the counter for a few weeks. He slept in the pepper! He didn't even react to a touch of pepper on his nose!
We tried the noisy cans. It startles the cats at first but they keep coming back. I caught the kitten batting at the can full of pennies. He seemed to like the noise.
We can't leave water in anything. He'll drink out of glasses, toilets, dirty dishes in the sink, anything! He has clean water but he wants to drink dirty sink water.
I like the shock idea but I'm to the point where I just give up and clean the counters every time I use the kitchen. I am convinced that we are the home for misfit cats and just have to deal with it!
Try laying foil on the counter. Crumble it (keep it fairly loose so that when the cat steps on the foil, it makes noise) and tape along upper edge. Cats normally don't like foil because of the noise it makes.
Another possibiity...tape. Put masking or packaging tape, sticky side up, on the counter. Move it in from the edge a little so that he doesn't just jump over the tape. Hopefully the tape will stick to his paws. He should put on quite a show if it does stick. Neither of these remedies will hurt the cat and usually, one or the other works.

I've cured our little cat, 'Baby', of jumping up on the counter just by wetting my hand and flicking a few drops her way. Now, if she ever relapses, all I have to do is turn the water on and she scoots.
An occasional 'BANG' on the counter - slapping an open palm on the coutertop - sends her scurrying, too.
The water pistol idea hasn't worked. The kitten is a freak, he doesn't care if he's wet! One of the other cats loves tin foil so we can't try that. I like the idea of the tape though. Perhaps he'll stick to the counter so he can't run around and make messes!
With Christmas approaching, I'd like to get seasonal with this topic... how do you keep the cats out of the Christmas tree? We've gone to putting the good ornaments at the top and cheap plastic ornaments at the bottom. The cats can trash the lower ornaments and leave the heirlooms alone. Of course, my tree looks terrible with this decorating scheme.
I think the water gun approach is probably the most effective.. my neighbor's cats climb on everything and are always knocking things over, plus she lets them eat from her plate.. yuck!
The water thing only works when you are around. My cats scurry as soon as they see me grab the water bottle if they up on something they're not supposed to be on. However, they know they can get away with it when my hubby is home because he doesn't make them get down. Plus, I know they are up on stuff when I'm sleeping. This has become very evident recently after I decorated for Easter. I have a basket with plastic eggs on my kitchen table and the cats seem to think I put it there for their enjoyment. Every morning there are a few more eggs missing from the basket. I have found a couple of them so far, but where they put the rest remains a mystery. I think they may have a secret stash in the basement some where.
