A story about our Himalayan
For over 20 years I wanted to have a Himalayan cat - I didn't need fancy papers or anything, just wanted to have one.
The day I decided to do something about it, and wondered how to find a cat like this - I was driving home from work and - no kidding - on the side of this country road, was a tiny Himalyan kitten sitting there as if she had gotten my message and was waiting for me. I was not even surprised, just pulled over, looked everywhere for a house she may have come from with full intention of returning her, but there was no house and this was a desolate area. All I can figure, is someone left her on the roadside. She fit right into my coat pocket!
When I brought her in the house, I was a bit concerned about our adult cat Sissy (the white one in the photo on my site) She was our only pet at the time. I rubbed them both with a cloth, back and forth to share their scent with each other, turned the kitten loose and Sis went right up to her, licked her and then ran outside where she found a mouse and brought it into the house, a gift for the kitten.
We watched the entire scene in awe - Sis mothered that kitten like it was her baby, and tried so hard to teach her to hunt and eat mice, but the kitten never did want such a job. She grew up to be totally an inside cat, only going outside to strut around looking beautiful. My sons named her "Sh***y Kitty" because she would also not use a litter box more than one time. This was a high maintenence cat!
But she was sweet and affectionate to everyone and loved being admired. Here is a poem I wrote for her:
To my little Himalayan Kitty:
Long ago I put out there a search just for you.
You must have received it because it came true!
Only 15 years later, in the car on the phone,
I spotted you on the road sitting alone!
I looked all around and nobody was there,
And I wondered how someone could simply not care.
I pulled over quickly and walked straight ahead
To pick you up hoping that you were not dead.
You were tiny and sweet and quite young I could see.
Your unblinking blue eyes held a questioning plea.
You asked me to keep you forever with me.
Of course! I claimed you and you belonged that day,
To me because I was the one who could say
That I made this happen back then in that way.
You stayed by the house and protected it gaily
From foxes and creatures who intruded daily!
You didn’t like mice and you shook your right paw
When white kitty showed you a mouse in her claw.
You think you’re a princess now and you recline
Anyplace that you think looks very fine.
You show off yourself and you roll in the street,
Showing importance to all that you meet.
They admire and pet you because they all know
You are good for just one thing and that is all show.
I don’t care cause I love you and you are my kitty.
You might not be useful but you sure are pretty.
