Tried that, didn't work. Was just an invite to him to chew more. Unfortunately he's down to a stub and went to chew on that after the second amputation. What stopped him was a (and I hate to admit it) a smack and loud NO and then picking him up and telling him NO NO NO NO DONT DO THAT. There was nothing left to amputate and the vet said if he continued to eat at himself the only thing left to do was euthanize.
So I'm glad it all worked out for the best. Now he's just terrorizing the house. He's as bad as having a coon in the house!
