The Specialty Purebred Cat Rescue instantly became a huge interest to me the first time I ran across this site. Since then I have found numerous ways to help 'get the word' out about the wonderful work this place does for Purebred Cats in need.
Some of the stories these cats have gone through are heartbreaking, some cats lost their homes for various reasons, some are from shelters where they were found wandering around, some were found in terrible condition from abuse, some from backyard breeders, others from loving homes, but their owners could not keep them. Whatever the case, Specialty Purebred does wonders helping them, bringing them back from any health issues, they are all vet checked, shots etc, and then they are very careful matching new owner and kitty up for a long and loving 'forever home.'
Check out the following website... kitties and their stories.
Over time we have been asked many times why there is purebred cat rescue. "With all the millions of "regular" kitties out there that are starving and desperate for care and homes, why just purebreds?" they ask. Or, "There can't be really that many purebred cats out there that need help. I never see them in shelters and people spend so much money on a purebred cat they certainly wouldn't dump it!" Wrong on both accounts.
The person who founded this rescue, Kirsten Kranz, did not set out to do purebred cat rescue 10 years ago. She had no idea there was such a thing as rescue at all. She volunteered many hours with local humane societies, dealing primarily with cats, and discovered there was a considerable network of purebred dog rescues but nothing for cats.
One day at one shelter an incredibly neglected Somali (long haired Abyssinian) was dropped off by an abusive owner who had paid at least $500 for this cat before ruining him with neglect and throwing him away. Simon was a mere flea-infested skeleton with piercing eyes and a stare that said "TAKE ME." And Kirsten did take him because his physical condition was so terrible he would have been euthanized on the spot if he ahd not been removed. He was our introduction to this incredible breed and the world of purebred cats in general. Though this rescue started with only one person and an idea, it grew at a rapid pace, and soon a number of volunteers were there to help as well. Word spread and soon shelters and other rescues from all over the midwest were calling, desperate to get these cats into special care. Despite the large number of dog rescues in the area, this is the ONLY one that will take in only purebred cats, and they come to us from as far away as Colorado....
I love to go back to this page and read the stories of these kitties and look at the pictures of how far they have come in the hands of their new loving owners.
Last year 701 cats found 'forever homes.' So far this year adoptions have reached 285 and climbing. Hopefully they will break the record of last's years adoptions.

BENNIE was admitted to one of our foster homes a few days ago as an emergency take-in. This gorgeous Chocolate Point Siamese boy had been pulled off the streets of one of the worst parts of Chicago by one of our exceptionally dedicated and brave volunteers, so that he would not have to die there. Bennie is only about a year old but was very dehydrated and suffering from an injury that had become infected and spread over half his face. Currently Bennie is at our local vet clinic where he will remain for a number of days getting IV antibiotics and and preparing for several surgeries to clean up the terrible infection. Despite all he has been though, Bennie is an exceptionally nice cat who seems to be suffering as much from lack of love as from his injury. The cost for his hospital stay and subsequent surgeries will be high, putting further strain on our already thin budget…and he is just one of many cats we help and heal behind the scenes all the time. If you can find it in your heart to help sponsor Bennie to get him through this painful ordeal and back to health and a happy home, PLEASE DONATE! It is tax deductible and will do so much good! Just go to our “DONATE” tab above or snail mail a donation to: SPCR, 3032 47th Ave., Kenosha, Wi. 53144!
The photo of Bennie just tugged at my heartstrings so much that I had to add him on here with hopes that everyone will take time to notice his plight and help out a little. If you can't send a donation please just send a little prayer for his recovery. This poor cat has some recovery to do and hopefully in the end he will find a really good 'forever' home.
UPDATE: The rescue director visited Bennie today (7/28) at Care Animal Hospital in Kenosha and Bennie is doing very well for as injured as he is. His vet has been cleaning the dead and damaged tissue from his face and head and though it may look pretty gruesome to the average viewer, it looks WAY better than it was before because it’s now healing! And the best news is that his left eye is FINE! The vet expects that he may lose more dead skin down to the bridge of his nose before it is all over and the damaged part goes down to the muscle tissue in his head. But he is on several different antibiotics and is undergoing “wet to dry” bandage changes several times a day for a week or two until he is healed enough for surgery (which should make him look pretty normal when all is said and done!). Through all of this Bennie has been very good natured and was even purring when the director saw him in his little white hospital collar. He is eating like a pig and enjoying the attention the vet staff is lavishing on him. We will keep you posted!
UPDATE: Well here we have Bennie (7/30) in the vet clinic with one of his special bandages on. The vet is very pleased at how much he is healing and how well he is doing! He is handling everything like the sweet boy he is and we hope in a few weeks he will be well enough to go home! THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT TOWARDS THIS LITTLE GUY! IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Bennie is back in foster care! After two operations and a week at the vet clinic, he is healing so well that it was felt there was no reason to keep him there any longer! And you can see that he actually does have TWO beautiful blue eyes! His wound is only a third the size it was when he came into rescue and it is clean and healing very rapidly. The vet who treated him said it was a bite wound to the head that had gone septic. He will be in foster care for a little while longer as the wound resolves itself and then will be able to go to the family that is anxiously awaiting his recovery!
For those of you that may be following Bennie's story here I just noticed a new update and picture of how Bennie is doing. Had to post what they wrote on the website about him.
HI FOLKS, IT’S BENNIE! I just want to tell all of you that I’m feeling wonderful! It’s awesome being able to live in a house where I don’t have to fight for food–there’s so MUCH of it and it’s really good. Now I can watch the rain from inside where I stay dry and the air conditioning keeps me cool even when it’s 90 degrees outside. Nothing here tries to hurt me or scare me. Oh, and does my mom have the best lap ever! All I want to do is hug and kiss her every time I see her. I feel so much better and so safe and I have you to thank for it. All of your prayers, good wishes and donations have made this possible and I will be forever indebted to you. Love, Bennie (SEE MY NEW VIDEO AT YouTube- BENNIE UPDATE AGAIN! )
Bennie’s foster mom adds that his physical wounds are almost healed. Only a tiny surface wound remains of the once horribly infected area of his face and head. Soon his beautiful chocolately hair will cover up any scars and replace the white hairs that came with his infection. The next stage of Bennie’s recovery will be to learn to be a kitty. Initially he was terrified of toys. The first time his foster mom introduced a feather wand toy he leaped nearly 4 feet straight up in the air and back pedaled faster than an NFL defensive back. Every hair stood on end. He does find great fun in playing with toy mice (maybe they remind him of his former days hunting for food) and catnip toys. Bennie needs to learn that he doesn’t have to live on guard. In his past life everything represented danger and uncertainty. His only priority was to survive. He still displays this fear at times but is getting better every day. Little bit, by little bit, the layers of pain are washing away and he is healing. Many thanks to all of you and the power of positive thinking.
It’s BENNIE! And as you can see, there’s nothing like stretching out on the couch for a nice Sunday afternoon snooze. I am grateful to share that I am no longer “available” and am living better than I’ve ever done before. I’ve been adopted by one of the foster moms and I now have a big house and 3 kitty siblings. It’s so cool to be served breakfast and dinner every day and to have my choice of toys, places to sleep and sunbeams to warm my body. Nothing on me hurts anymore! All of my injuries are healed. (The vets think that the scar on my head is really interesting and they have to come and look at it whenever I go to see them. They shake their heads and keep telling me that I’m the luckiest cat in the world to have lived AND to have my two gorgeous blue eyes.) They don’t have to tell ME how lucky I am! I know!!! I don’t miss climbing trees, jumping from roof-to-roof along the rows of tenant houses, racing to elude mean critters or scavenging the garbage to find food. I love everybody and everything. From here on, I will send out lots of happy feet to the other kitties who are not as lucky as I am. They deserve to have what I have too. Thank you all again for your love and support. Keep up the good work because there will always be kitties who need you. Thanks to you and SPCR, I plan to enjoy this life for a very long time.
