A new 10 year study suggest that a cat lowers your risk of having a heart attack by 40 percent just from the comfort we get from living our lives with a cat.
What if you have a cat who likes to hide behind the curtains and jump your ankles when you walk by? That surely has to knock a few years off you, especially at 3 am!
I prefer dogs but have had many cats even though I'm allergic to them.
It took my last girlfriend's cat a year to warm up to me. One day I was sitting in the easy chair and she just hopped into my lap. Her name was Kali, named after the Hindu goddess of Destruction, if that tells you anything. I knew her problem tho.. people always paid more attention to Rascal, our Shih Tzu so I started giving her a treat when Rascal got one and she LOVED the laser pointer. She didn't like it, but she'd even tolerate me giving her a bath! She wouldn't even let Cindy do that!
We have two strays that hang out around here, a Tom and a female. The Tom won't let anyone but me pick him up and the female runs from anyone else but me. I've had her in the house a few times and sat with her in the recliner. She's fine unless I set her down, then she wants out side.
That said, cats can be soothing, but they can also be a pain.
I have a cat tale that supports your premise of Cats being good for your health.
We had this calico that had been a dumped kitty, we named her Lena Xena (Warrior Kitty). She was not the nicest cat and definitely had an attitude, but she was a survivor (she survived being hit by a car, a house fire, and almost losing her front paw). She barely tolerated my other cats and was known to nip both my Mom and me.
Well, when my Mom fell and broke her hip, Lena stayed with and kept her until I found Mom in the garden. It wasn't too long after that, that Mom developed leukemia and had decided to forgo a treatment that only had a 50% chance of cure with extreme side effects, Mom was 77. Even though Mom would have blood transfusions which would give her more energy for a while, she would often get tired. But Mom being the sort not to sit around would get up and get going and Lena had her own agenda and would make Mom sit in the big easy chair so Lena could get petted. By doing this Lena enabled Mom to have an excuse (to herself) to sit and relax, she had to pet Lena. They would often end up having naps together in rocker recliner.
My Mom declined and fell into a semi-coma and when the ambulance crew came to take her to the hospital for that last time, Lena laid on top of the covers, right next to Mom and did not move, even though strangers put the covers over Lena, in order to take Mom to the hospital, Lena did not move.
Although Lena could be a real pain sometimes, she was an angel to my Mom, helping her through a tough time. Unfortunately, one night after Mom had died, Lena went out on an adventure and never came home, maybe she missed Mom too much.
Cats may have their own agendas and be more self-reliant, but they are also very loving and loyal.
How lucky your mom was to have this wonderful feline companion in her final days..
Great story.. thanks for sharing!

What a wonderful story. They say that angels are all around us watching over us, maybe this little kitty was sent to help take care of your mom. Maybe Lena left when she was no longer in need so she could find another person she could help take care of.
