Cat Help

I am posting this for my sister who has to make a difficult decision.

My sister adopted a cat from the Portage County Humane Society last year. Zoe is a wonderful, beautiful, spayed, declawed and micro-chipped female. Zoe is the queen of the house and loves attention. She is the perfect lap cat. She has always been great with my nephew and never any behavioral issues. Until now.

My sister about a month ago moved in with her boyfriend who has two dogs. They have tried to give Zoe her own space but she refuses to come out of the bathroom the majority of the time. She has a huge shelf with her food, water and catbed. She will come out on occasion, but she is not happy. My sister had thought maybe to bring out the cat in her she got her a playmate. Needless to say, a week after the kitten arrived she was found laying in a pool of blood and unconscious. The kitten was only alone in the kitchen for not even 3 minutes. They thought that maybe the kitten got injured because they were remodeling and got caught on something...but at the vet clinic yesterday the vet swears it is a cat bite. Zoe has never showed any sort of mean aggression...not happy maybe but never to that degree.

She is not a happy camper. Zoe is a wonderful cat on all apsects if she could be the one and only pet in the household. I would take her in a heartbeat, but with my zoo it wouldn't be solving anything. This is heart wrenching for my sister. She loves Zoe to no end. But Zoe has proved to everyone that she is not happy. She loves all people and kids. Just not anything else with fur. My sister even has a parakeet and she has never tried to go after that.

We just think that Zoe had a hard childhood and maybe was mistreated by other animals. Who knows. All we know is she deserves to be happy. My sister knows I talk to a lot of animal lovers here on the Bubbler and maybe by word of mouth Zoe can find herself a new loving home. With all the weirdo's and animal haters out there we are being extra cautious. I hope you all can understand. Please help me help Zoe. She is very special and I just wish we could keep her in the family.

Re: Cat Help

Cats are very territorial and hate change. When I brought home a new kitten almost two years ago, my Finner was terrible for months. He hid on top of the kitchen cabinets and swiped at the kitten whenever he could. Even now he doesn't like the kitten, but at least the clawing has stopped. I think Zoe was upset about the dogs, and the new cat was the last straw.

It's good that Zoe is in her own room, and that she is being let out under supervision. If it has only been a month, I think they should keep up with this process. I know it's hard to lock up an animal, but it's for her safety. She needs to gradually adjust to the new house, people and pets.

Do you think your sister would be willing to try this for a few more months? If it just doesn't work, I'd recommend taking her back to the shelter so they can screen adopters. It may also be in your adoption contract that you must return the cat to that shelter if it doesn't work out.

Re: Cat Help

There is nothing in the adoption papers about having to return her. And as for trying it longer, they are afraid to bring the kitten back in the house til Zoe is gone. Even without the new kitten, she wants no part of the dogs. They even brought the dogs one at a time over to my sister's house on occasion on her own grounds and she would freak out. I believe and she believes this is the best solution and it would give Zoe a chance to roam free. I am sure we will eventually find her a new loving home. Thanks for all the advice though.

Re: Cat Help

Portage County..........Pardeville is in Portage Co right??

Contact Diana at Mappar and see if she will be able to help you. She runs a rescue for many critters, including kitties and might have room for her there. It's not to safe to let the kitty roam. She's going to get hurt or killed

Re: Cat Help

Man, I sure have been busy. I still have my sister's kitten here for the time being. Getting bigger and stronger every day. She is still trying to find Zoe a home. Don't worry, she is not letting her roam or anything. We love our pets too much for that. I am sure we will find Zoe the perfect home soon. Til then, the kitten stays here. We don't want to put Zoe back in a shelter, that is where she came from.

Re: Cat Help

Have you tried placing a classified here on the bubbler??

Just a FYI and I know you already know this, but I feel better saying it....screen anyone who responds....ask all sorts of questions and even ask for a vet reference.
