Built for Hermann Christian Timm and his wife, Augusta (Muenster) Timm, the house was erected in two sections. A frame, Greek Revival-influenced residence was built for the Timm family in 1873. In 1892, a large Stick Style addition was constructed on the front of the earlier house, and the earlier house, now the rear, was remodeled. August R. Neuman, a contractor from Kiel,
WI, built the new plan and carried out the remodeling. The house remained in the Timm family until 1974, when Herman C. Timm II, son of Herman C. and Augusta Timm, gave the house and most of its contents to the Society.
The restoration of the Timm House to the period of 1892, took three years to complete. Through the generous support of the Jeffris Family Foundation, Janesville,
WI, of a $562,000 matching grant, the Society was able to meet the projected $1.2 million needed to completely restore the house to its former elegance. The house’s architecture is considered significant because of the quality and faithfulness of its design to the stick period and style. Combine the fact with the importance of Hermann Timm to the community because of his contributions to the politics and business of New Holstein and the target date of 1892 becomes clearer. Through the assistance of River Architects, LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and the talents of Schneider and Schneider Construction, along with the work of Jim Vorphal of Crown Services, Inc., Kiel, the original beauty of the Timm House is now, once again, available to the general public in the form of a house museum. The Society is sincerely grateful to all of the contributors that made this restoration a reality, and to the many master crafts people that worked on the project.
The Timm House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, in recognition of its architecture.
