Not a bad article, but the simplest rule I follow is just to ask. I tell them who I am, why I think it is important to pick their brain, then ask the questions to which I'd like to know the answers. And I thank them, sincerely.

I was about 35 before I really figured out that it is better to learn from others' experience than to keep doing it the hard way!

Many people are flattered and fairly willing to share what they know.. just don't ask for the recipe to Bush's Baked Beans!

One other method is to invite them to speak to a group.. this is where Meetup.com comes in handy. Organize and plan an event!
