Who thinks manufacturing is starting to come back?

I am curious what others think about the manufacturing sector in Wisconsin. I am seeing some pick up from service side of things. However I know a lot of big companies have just run out of inventory and are placing orders. So is this a slight recovery starting or just a little bump because they are out of stock? Whats your thoughts?

Thanks
Jamey

Re: Who thinks manufacturing is starting to come back?

I work with a LOT of manufacturing clients. Most are doing okay, a few doing well - except for cash flow - receivables that are out 60 or 90 days.

People aren't spending unless they must (like the inventory depletion you mentioned). And those who do spend are stretching payment terms to the limit.

Regards,
Keith

Re: Who thinks manufacturing is starting to come back?

It seems pretty typical right now that many companies are paying 30 to 60 days later unless you are able to hold a magic wand over there head that you will not give them any more service until you recieve a check or at a minimum contact them several times. We have one huge company that is out almost 6 months now. I have noticed some companies say that they are doing a lot more work or almost as much with fewer employees. So this may also be what is keeping companies from hiring even though they picked up a bit. There are several companies that I know that have brought some people back. But is this temporary I guess we will see.

Re: Who thinks manufacturing is starting to come back?

Just posted this in daily chat - works here, too...

Our client Dehumidifier Corporation of America (Dehumidifier Manufacturer, Dehumidifier Accessories - Dehumidifier Corporation of America) from Milwaukee BizTimes today:
Drying the air - BizTimes
(page 6 of print edition, dated June 29 - July 9, 2009)

"While many manufacturers are seeing a slowing in orders and have laid off workers, DCA’s orders have already increased 17 percent from 2008, Jim Metzger said."

"DCA now has between 25 and 30 employees. The company is looking for more employees..."
Gratifying to be part of the web presence partner team with companies like DCA. We have another client up 150% this June over last, and up 50% for the year. Many others up 10, 12, 20%. Most doing without much extra labor. Some are down, but I like to think not as far as they might be.

These are smart companies and they work hard. They deserve the credit for their success, though I'm pleased to work with them for good results.

Regards,
Keith
