The second Tuesday in March is Organize Your Home Office Day.
Whether you work from home as many people do or simply have a den or office space at home for organizing bills, often we let things get away from us and what was once a neat and well organized work area quickly becomes a disaster zone.
I usually try to set aside a day of the week to get things back in order but still find that mail, in particular, spills over into the living area no matter how hard I try.
Right now I have a stack of "to do" papers on top of my printer/scanner and an even bigger stack of mail and magazines piled into the easy chair to the side of my computer desk.
I have more like a work space, than and actual office, set up in the living room of my apartment.
How about you? Organized? Or perpetually "getting organized"?
Feel free to share before and after pics of your office or work space.. but get that home office organized!
How about you? Organized? Or perpetually "getting organized"?
I pretty much keep everything in files (filing cabinet with a million files) & make a point of filing stuff right away, otherwise i risk losing important docs, statements etc... learned that lesson the hard way many years ago lol
Now dusting... there's something i will never be on schedule with!
I am pretty good at organizing. I just have to keep on my husband since he starts making little piles everywhere. I can't stand it when he leaves mail and papers on the kitchen table or counter since I don't want to look at it when we're eating at the table.

My husband does that too! He takes the mail out of the envelopes and then throws it all on the desk in the kitchen so it's all mixed up! I hate that!
My desk in my office is fairly well organized. We have three big filing cabinets for business stuff and a small one for personal papers. My husband's desk is another story though! He just throws things on it and then I have to go on a search and rescue mission because he can't find something! When he's in the office, he uses my desk because there's no space to do anything on his! Clutter is his middle name! LOL
When my father was running his business he built his office as an addition onto the house. It was a very nice office, but he too had the 'piles' of stuff everywhere. I've somewhat carried that on as a tradition but just with regular mail/bills. I have a 3 year old that runs around and makes a mess so we have the filing cabnet (2 drawer) in the laundry closet so he can't get into it. this makes it a hassle for us adults too so what we've been doing is throwing away the bill stubs after we know the payments have been received by the phone, electric, and water utility companies. This spring/summer I'm starting my dad's business back up (he passed away about a year ago) and have decided to build a small desk in the cube truck i recently purchased. I plan on keeping my estimation sheets in there, insurance forms, osha posters and anything else required. I've purchased the CricKet wireless USB mobile internet. works great. Now we just need the economy to shift a bit so people dont back out on their home improvement plans. included in my setup which isnt complete yet is the power inverter for the printer and laptop, as it is a mobile office as well as workshop.
Most of my mail ends up on top of my printer or in the easy chair next to my desk until it finally gets to be too much and I actually move it to the round file..
Got that from a book on office organization I read many years ago.
Toss: Make every effort to do that first. Think about all the junk you keep in case you "might" need it some day.
Refer: Give it to the person who could / should get it done, answer any questions, set a deadline
Action: Do it. Now. Or shortly. If it is a big project, break it down into parts. Do one now, or shortly. Refer components (with questions/answers and deadlines)
File: Put it away. Now. Save from handling it twice. Or three or four or five times. Filing arranged by importance, convenience (based on how often you may need to retrieve).
____________
Sounds easy. If only it were so. The system is important; makes the discipline of doing it systematically easier.

Well, never too late to get organized.. I'm thinking of moving my computer back into the bedroom and make an effort to separate work from my daily routines.
And now, from the bedroom and back to the living room.. working in the bedroom makes me sleepy!

Wow, I noticed that I posted on here but I honestly do not remember this thread....looks really interesting though and will have to read it more thoroughly. Thanks for bringing it back to life again Dave.
