Yea that does seem like a lot. That said it seems to me computers is one area where products aim to achieve lower energy use when possible.

Google has over 450,000 severs in 20 data centers.. in 2005, Google spent over $7 BILLION on electricty.

Google plans to go to off-shore water based data centers in an effort to reduce it's carbon footprint and become energy self sufficient..

Google leads the way in clean energy for their cyber operation. I like their idea of generating electricity from the motion of the ocean. The time I spent at sea, the natural motion of the sea made for a good nights sleep. The "Rockabye Baby" effect. Using the ocean water to cool their servers is another money saving idea. I wish I'd have gotten in on Google stock when they went public a few years back.

Old thread from 2008.. one can only assume energy needs and power consumption has grown.. wonder how things compare today?

Alot of companies are finding ways to recycle their energy use.. harnessing the energy from servers is just one aspect.
