Holiday parties - best and worst

What's the best holiday party you ever had at work - and why?

The worst?

Please share some thoughts for making a holiday party a great time with people you spend so much of your time with.

Regards,
Keith

Re: Holiday parties - best and worst

Personally I dislike going to the 'spouse's Christmas work Party. Even though when they had one it was at a nice resturant so the food would be good, it would be so boring to sit with other couples making small talk when you know you may very well never see the people again. And it never fails you end up sitting at a table with a few that know each other so they monopolize the conversation through out the evening. Then there's the 'handing' out the awards, or the gift cards, the special 'moment's for the evening and you clap, and clap, for people that for the most part only the employees know and laugh at all the 'inside' jokes, while you sit with a 'fake' smile plastered on your face. Then there is always the few that drink to much so they laugh to much, and talk to much. lol

Oh the great evening that everyone will say was had by all and most of us are thinking, I could be home watching t.v. (or on the Internet!). lol Or better yet, getting last minute Christmas shopping, wrapping etc. done at home then spending a whole evening trying to have fun. lol

The best times I remember was the Christmas Parties they didn't have. Those were always the best. Instead the boss would give up free passes with food coupons for the large festival in the town the boss was from. Besides the rides, and food, there would be a decent concert in the evening and large prizes you can enter to win. This was during the month of August when it was always great to spend the day outside and as a family. It was always on 'family day' where you get an arm bracelet and ride all day. We had so many great times when we went there with the kids. Even for the employees that didn't have kids there was enough great contests at the end of the day that it was worth coming to see if you won something and listen to some good music.

I've been on the 'other' side as well with myself as the employee and they usually weren't that much fun either. lol

Just my thoughts.

Re: Holiday parties - best and worst

I am not a fan of Holiday Parties. I'd rather be doing something with my critters.

Re: Holiday parties - best and worst

My husband and I have always gone to company Christmas parties. There are a few that we have missed, but not many. I usually had fun at them. Then again, I'm not afraid to get out there and dance.

I can think of a couple times that we had fun. One Christmas party they had a big chocolate fountain set up with all kinds of foods to dip with. There was pretzels, fruits, crackers, cookies, and marshmallows. I thought it was a really fun way to eat. My husband was trying to get one of his coworkers to stick his head on the fountain.

-----------------------------------------------

Last year the company Christmas party was in the Dells at one of those waterparks. I forgot which one. We ended up getting a room with fireplace and a jacuzzi. I know most of my husband's coworkers didn't get that in their room. It paid to book late, because that was all that was left. It was a bad idea to use both the fireplace and jacuzzi at once, because the room ended up being a big sauna and way too hot.

At the hotel/waterpark it was nice since everything was all in one location, no going outside. We had a simple dinner buffet, then headed to one of several bars in the building. First, I ordered a flaming drink that the waitress couldn't get to light, so I had a non-flaming drink. We watched the people in the waterpark playing while we drank. None of us wanted to get wet at that time of night. Next, we headed to the bar with the dance floor. I really enjoyed watching the bartenders. They all were juggling and throwing things in the air. They really put on quite a show. A few of us danced, but I wasn't crazy about what the DJ was playing.

The drive up to the Dells was very memorable and not in a good way. It was snowing like crazy. Normally, we wouldn't have driven in that, but we wanted to go so bad. I was worried the whole time that someone would hit us or that the car would go off the road. It was a very scary ride up there and a few times I was sure we were toast. It is normally less than a 2 hour drive, but it took us 3 and half hours to get there. We saw a nasty semi accident on the opposite side just past Madison. A few semis had run off the road and one had it's side ripped open. I found out later on that someone in a car (maybe a jeep?) had been killed
