What is Your definition of next?

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

Main Entry: next
Pronunciation: 'nekst
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English nIehst, superlative of nEah nigh -- more at NIGH

immediately adjacent (as in place, rank, or time)

What is Your definition of next?

When someone says to you I will see you next weekend, What do they mean? The one coming up or the following weekend?

I seem to have this ongoing disagreement with my DW and I am now at the point where I avoid the use of the word "next".

I just think this might be a good topic to get some new activity going on in here.

So what is your thougts on the word "Next"?

I keep thinking of what they say at a bakery..."next please" do they mean they want to skip the following person to get to the next one?

...next means the first one coming up. Unless you say "I'm doing X this weekend, and Y the next". It means the future-adjacent weekend to your last point of reference...

My daughter and I go round and round on this. lol

OK, if it's on Sunday/Mon/Tues and you want to do something 'next weekend' that would be the 'next' weekend coming up in a week (or less) that would be the 'next' Sat/Sun's weekend.

If it's closer to the end of the week, then I would say 'this' weekend. That would be the very weekend in a few days.

If I have something in my hand and I'm going through a pile of items and I need to ask for the next item, then I would ask for the 'next' one. Because that would be the 'next' one in line, or top of the pile.
