You're right, not everyone does. But the number is growing. Even if I had a bike, it's too far to ride to and from work (esp. in the recent heat). There are a lot of places that public trans doesn't reach. Yes, everyone who can do more, should. I totally agree with that. The problem is that that by itself won't solve the problem because even if we all bought the bare minimum of gas we really only absolutely need, it's still enough for the gas companies to continue to make record profits and offers no incentive for them to lower prices.
I wonder how much longer it will be until it's cheaper for me to not have a job outside the home because I'll be paying more in gas than I'm making working. At this rate I make it to be only another year or two, if it continues to rise 50%/yr from this point on.
On this subject, I have a pet peeve about those neighbors who must mow their lawn with a big riding mower and do it every five days??????? They just HAVE to have a nice shaved lawn. Instead of letting it grow a little more, saving a little gas and not keeping up with the JONES'S....imagine how much gas we would save if they all cut back on the greed of it all? Sick. We are our own enemy. I come out by the lake for the quiet, and then I get a few neighbors who can't stay off the riding lawn mower.
Another thing that gets me thinking. Why is it that the feds are building all these park and ride places along side highways lately?
Heh. Out around vacation lakes they should require people to use the old-style manual mowers. I guarantee that would quiet things down and save TONS of gas!
down to 2.27 per gallon now by me...whoo-hooooooo!
It's $2.24 /gallon in Appleton.
and I look at this like is is a bargin?
TV is talking about people getting theur hummers out again and garaging thier Hybrids!!
Like I have that option.
ofcourse some say it is to maintain the current political party
I can not say but I feel I should be looking at spring and fall road trip vacations as opposed to the summer.
Thought about getting the Kwik-Trip card to save 3 cents a gallon. That would be about $26.00 a year.
Down over a buck now.
Every conversation in the last 5 stations has been about how the prices will go back up after November elections...just in time for Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday traveling.
For Brookfield/Waukesha folks, the PDQ (which is, I might add, a local chain, so your money stays in the community) at Watertown and Springdale is down to $2.19.
I doubt it has anything to do with the elections, or not much. The gas companies got scared because everyone started talking about alternative energy and actually moving in that direction. Now that the price is low, the rank and file will forget about it until the price rises again.
I hope people are brighter than that, but, frankly, I don't hold out much hope for it.
I am not happy but if everyone is going to do what I am going to do , there will be no vacations anywhere this summer for me. How will that help our economy? Instead of traveling I will go to the library and take out travel dvds.
If I can , I will be riding my bike to work. and only drive when I absolutely need to drive. I will be cutting back everywhere I can so I can pay for gas.
I might even use my vacation to OCCUPY someplace.
This is getting as old as I am old.

I hear you there. We've already have been forced to cut back on things for the last 10 years. This isn't going to help us get ahead.
Going out to eat less. Going out to bars less (no seeing live music). Traveling and exploring less. Buying only necessities and making do with what we own. Keeping my 12 year old car until it can drive no more. Letting my landscaping go. These are things we already do now, but now it will be even less of the fun things.
Trying to find ways to earn a few extra bucks. Selling things on Ebay or Craigslist. Buying things at rummage sales and thrift stores to sell on Ebay. Husband working on cars to sell or fixing other people's cars. Me seeing what I can do for art or crafts to sell. Husband going in with 2 other guys to flip cars to sell. These are things we already do or are working on doing.
It's just about survival now. Americans are tired of all the crap.
We're still spoiled in comparison to Europe and Asia. My wife and I have a small house and work near home. Gas could be $4 tomorrow and I probably wouldn't even notice. As for vacations one of our favorite yearly stops is Spur of the Moment Ranch and I can't see high gas prices keeping us from such a short trip. It's going to hurt when I drive to Utah for memorial day weekend but I planned the trip at $4.25 just in case.

Well then just maybe you can keep the economy going.
As for me I will be out of the economy loop and anyone dependandant on money from people like me will be hurting the same as us but that makes it all betterand acceptable.

I just don't see how can anything under $4 a gallon can be unexpected. We've been here before. My wife is a public teacher and I'm a non union construction worker. We have a mortgage, 2 SUVs and a kid. We have a small home and both choose to work close to it. I guess we're fortunate to have picked the paths we have in life. Gas prices would have to get ridiculous to stop us from enjoying a couple getaways. I will admit working close to home is big but that didn't happen on accident. I hope your troubles are not health related or anything like that. I respect that I do not walk in your shoes.

You are doing better than I did. I did not do that until I had to walk in my current shoes.
As they say "what goes around, comes around" so you know where I am in that phrase.
and yes there are some health issues that have taken us down to one paycheck.

I really wish I could work close to home, but where I live there aren't a ton of jobs unless you want to work retail or in a doctor's office. Not much for my field at all. I am forced to look for work a lot farther from home.
My husband has to do that as well since the jobs don't pay as well around here compared to going towards Milwaukee. He has been working that direction for years at a couple different companies. His company moved even farther away (50 miles, one way) and he also drives to all the stores for his job, using his own vehicle. Not all jobs involve sitting in an office. He is also forced to stay with his current employer due to health reasons and workers comp. It will be this way for a while until things improve for us.
Depending on where you go in Kenosha the price of gas today is between 3.75 (lowest) to 3.95 (highest). Just terrible as I go through a ton of gas each week takin taking kids to 3 different schools, work, actiivites etc. etc.
cheapest I saw today in town here was $3.50 and we said that place is "only" $3.50. A week ago it would have been "holy cow, it's way up to $3.50." How pathetic is that?
