I'm sure all (or at least most of you) have heard of George Carlin. He is a pretty funny comedian.
Here is some good quotes (some funny, and some just make you think):
-Singing is basically a form of pleasant controlled screaming
-If you ever meet twins, talk to just one of them. It drives the other crazy.
-As soon as a person tells you they have a surprise for you, they have lost the element of surprise.
-"Best Seller" really means good seller. There can only be one best seller. All the rest are good sellers. Each succeeding book on the list is a "better seller".
-If the shoe fits, get another one just like it.
-Piano lessons sound like something a piano should take. Humans should take piano-playing lessons.
I got these from Carlin's books. Besides books, he has many CD's and DVD's out as well. If you haven't heard any of his stuff, give it a try at least once.
I used to enjoy George Carlin 20 or 25 years ago. He's still funny with alot of talent, I just don't like how his routine turns very political. Then it's only funny to half the crowd. Seems most comedians do the same. I think that's why the "Blue Comedy Tour" guys do well. They leave politics and social statements out of it for the most part.
Making fun of politics and politicians can be funny, but when it's obviously one sided and intended to make a personal social statement, that's when it's no longer a comedy act.

Don't forget religion. I haven't seen Carlin's act much (just one video of a show a few years back), but in the books and on his CD's, there is several religion references.
Blue Collar Comedy Tour guys don't do religion, I don't think. I love their act. Larry the Cable Guy is my favorite of them. Did you know that his first name isn't Larry? He got his name because of radio call ins he did a while back. He used his middle name (Larry) for it, then they needed a replacement for a cable guy act, so he did it. At one point in time, he had about 20 (or 30, not sure of the exact number) radio call ins he did. He did it for like 4 hours each day for a while.
Larry's first feature film seems funny. I will rent it though, since I don't go to the theaters much.
I agree with the comments about politics and religion. I wish entertainers would realize that we watch/listen/read them to be entertained, we don't want to know, or care what their opinions are.
Not me. I prefer political comedy, because it's usually smart comedy. To do an act about politics and actually be funny with it, takes a lot more skill and intelligence than fart jokes or "I drank so much my...." jokes. Those just aren't entertaining to me; they are so annoying that I'll change the channel if I'm watching a show that I usually enjoy but they start spieling into them.
Also, when politicians are preposterous, it's a civic duty to point it out to them and anyone who might vote for them in the future. Satirists are the final check and balance (well, short of violence, I guess) when the checks and balances built into the govt stop working.
After years of seeing Carlin on Carson(the tonight show) and enjoying his comedy,I saw him live.
I was amused in the first half and did not like the second half.
I think political humor is funny because it does not select an ethic group.
Anyone offended by political humor should think again as most is not focused on a particular group but the actions as a whole. We all need to laugh at ourselves now and then.
Ok now the second half of my Carlin experience all I can say if I want to be preached at I will go to church, yes he can make you think with his twisted logic but I paid to laugh not think!!!!! or Make a stand on an issue he thinks is IMPORTANT.
His play on words IS funny.
There is another thread about devils in church but maybe a thread about "more preachers than comedians in comedy" should be started.
I haven't seen Carlin live; his second act isn't jokes, more of a political dissertation? That's too bad, because he could probably sway a lot more people by getting his points across humourously.
For smart and funny political satire, I have to go with the hugely popular choice (wait... there's something about which I'm not in the minority?) and say there's nothing funnier in show biz right now than the Daily show and the Colbert Report. My husband and I may be doing different things and not speak to each other all evening because we're busy, but we always stop and watch Stewart and Colbert at ten. Olberman's (sp?) pretty funny too over at MSNBC.
