Filipino bone marrow donor in the US needed

My cousin Christine in the US is battling cancer, and urgently needs to find a bone marrow donor. Unfortunately, finding a perfect match for her bone marrow type is particularly difficult. This is hard enough for the average person; there are over 20,000 types of bone marrow, so the average person has a 1 in 20,000 chance of finding a match. These numbers are even worse for Christine. Because she is Filipino, she needs to find a donor of the same ethnic background, and there are hardly any Filipinos on the US National Registry.

It's been a long time since anything more was posted on this. Is there an update anywhere?

My husband will be celebrating his SIX YEAR anniversary for his bone marrow transplant (BMT) on April 12, 2006. We were fortunate that his brother was a perfect match and was his donor.

Obviously, getting more donors is very important to us. If anyone is interested in the BMT process and the process for the donor, please feel free to check our personal BMT website at http://www.geocities.com/gjmiklas. We started that site when the decision was finally made for my husband to have the BMT. It's rather graphic at times (in the diary), but we wanted to help as many folks as possible who have to undergo this horrific procedure.

Six years have now passed and my husband remains cancer-free thanks to his bone marrow transplant.

All it takes to get on the bone marrow donor registry is to give a little bit of blood so it can be tested. When you donate blood, it's just an extra vial -- not a big deal at all!

I checked back at NatmPros - the end of the thread and help is still needed. I'm learning about organ donations and such in the process.
