I keep missing them
every time I check it out it's in between questions.
Where did the saying "don't throw the baby out with the bath water" come from?

Throwing the baby out with the bath water originated when whole families took thier "weekly" bath in the same bath water, Dad went first, then Mom, the kids by age, oldest first, by the time it was time to bath the baby, the water was so dirty the baby could easily get lost in the water and get tossed out with it.
EWWWWW and to think I hate to use the same towel more than one time.
Since we are on the topic now of sayings,,,
Where did "Sleep tight" come from?????????

sleep tight which some people have suggested as an origin. Before the days of sprung mattresses, one method of creating a comfortable surface to lie on was to stretch ropes across from side to side of the bedframe in a criss-cross pattern. The ropes sagged after a while, and it was necessary to tighten them from time to time.
OR...
FROM WRAPPING A LINNEN SHEET AROUND YOU AT NIGHT TO KEEP THE BUGS FROM CRAWING IN BED WITH YOU AND BITTING YOU.

???
:? OK, we may have a debate here...when I first posted this the answer I came across was 18 which of course would make you correct.
HOWEVER...looking into this very important question a little further I found the following:
‘Animal Biscuits’ were officially renamed 'Barnum's Animals' in 1902. During the Christmas season, the package was redesigned as a circus wagon with a string attached to it, so it could be hung as a Christmas tree ornament. They sold for 5 cents, and they were an immediate hit.
In total there have been 37 different varieties of animal crackers since 1902. The current 17 varieties of crackers are tigers, cougars, camels, rhinoceros, kangaroos, hippopotami, bison, lions, hyenas, zebras, elephants, sheep, bears, gorillas, monkeys, seals, and giraffes. There are 22 crackers per box.
More than 40 million packages of these are sold each year, and they are exported to 17 countries. They are turned out at the rate of 12,000 per minute, and nearly 6,000 miles of string are used on the packages
:?: :?: So can someone tell us :?: :?: 17 or 18?
I won't sleep until I find out!

ANSWER!!
All is right with the world again! I found the answer! My brain is free to go on with other things! Yeah!
There are 18!!! You are correct!! Now it is your turn to post a question. LOL
Apparently when most of us grew up there was only 17 different animals! BUT for the 100th anniversary Nabisco added another animal, the Koala! Apparently they had an online/mail in vote set up to help pick which animal. It was between the Koala, the walrus, the penguin and the cobra.
The koala took 48 percent of the 296,510 votes.
The penguin 33%, walrus 10%, and the cobra 9%.
Well this certainly shows to really investigate your question before you post it on! lol lol ops:

Perhaps her best-known contribution to computing was the
invention of the compiler, the intermediate program that
translates English language instructions into the language of the
target computer.
she once waved her hand
and created a program langue of commands
common was her thought
portability she brought
this 3rd gl works so well
it's use still graces us today
Who is this person?

Grace Hopper!
I don't really know much about her, but we learned about her in school. I had one teacher who was really good about pointing out the unsung achievements of women and minorities, so we would have roll models that weren't just rich old white guys.
To double check my answer, I did a quick Google on her and found this bio some of you might be interested in:

Mathematician Grace Hopper (1906-1992) designed in 1952 the first compiler, the system that enables the computer to "read" its own programs from keyed instructions. The invention of the compiler was a sensational breakthrough, that opened up a new era of limitless horizons for automatic programming. Grace Hopper was Rear-Admiral of the US Navy.

Since I probably won't have time to come up with a question until Sunday, I defer to pk since we were obviously posting at the same time

Why thank you! I think... lol
Actually you won fair and square since you actually knew what the question was about...I had to google. ops: But this is great, helps to learn new things.
But I'll put a quick question on that should be fairly easy?
Gilligan of Gilligan's Island had a first name that was only used once, on the never-aired pilot show. What was the name? (and no, its not, little buddy).

Congratulations Crys and pk... both are smarties..
Now for Grace Hopper yes she was a smartie but let me tell you I had few other thoughts on her as I spent many hours(12 plus hrs) straight through peering at a green screen attempting to create COBOL programs!!!!!!!
I am very very gratefull I that I do not have to do that any more.
and then getting my "O"'s mixed with my "0"'s and those missing (.)periods !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrr

Also, I have an unfair advantage. I was captain of both the jv and varsity Quiz Bowl teams in high school and got named to the all-state first team, lettered in it, got a scholarship to Beloit out of it, all that high school sports star stuff you think of but for an academic sport rather than a physical one. That makes me quick on the buzzer ... er post ... and gives me a wealth of useless but interesting facts that I can only call upon when I'm trying to answer a question.
