The South and Life in it.

I felt that since I'm down here and your not. I can break some myths and truths about the dirty south.

so I'm opening up the doors for all the things that your wondering about maybe questions that you always wanted to ask but didn't know who to ask. Not say I know it all, but I b.s. really well and would love to give you some thing to think about.

I'll keep it as honest as possible and help tell about life in the south.

so ask away.

here are some things I see that is different:

smoking in conventant stores.
no rust (cars with 200,000 miles and still running)
every one in the hood owns a pitbull (well not everyone)
they have a lot of deer down here but most are the size of a great dane.
there is life with no basements (and it sucks) no houses have them.

there's more ask and find out.

grits down here is like malto meal up there.

it's good with butter and salt (when I eat it that's what I do). some people put suger in it and some hot sauce.

they got instant grits but I don't eat it but once a month...maybe less.

good to hear from you.

i gotta ask

Please dont be offended by this but....why do most of the people have all their crap in the yard? Arent there any junkyards down there? Some places ive seen have like 6 cars in the yard and all on blocks looking like noone has touched them in over 10 years. Ive been south a number of times and i think kentucky and tennesse have to be the cleanest.

In the south there is a lot of spiritual stuff that goes on ok...like voodoo. well they have this rat packing spirit that makes it impossible for them to throw anything away....ever.

it will include but not limited to:
cars
refeg's
washer's and dryers (it's just about any house hold appliance's)
furniture
chicken scrapings (I don't know why)
and t.v.'s

if It's not in the back it's in the front yard. So just to warn you it's not a rummage sale SO DON'T STOP!

icy weather and south bad news

yet another thing that surprises me about the south.

It iced here last night...we knew about it a day in advance but no preparations were made...this caused many accidents and delays possible deaths but most defiently insurance to raise.

Why...why, when you have a heads up on the weather, why not be ready. Make sense to me. This makes me almost positive that the captain of the titanic had to be southern because he did not know how to deal with ice even when he was warned.

that's all I got to say about that.

My husband and I vacationed in the south last year. I learned these things during my trip, which I found delightful overall. I would go down south again in a heartbeat!

- People are much nicer and willing to start a conversation at any time
- You get lemon in your water at a restuarant without asking for it
- Save room for dessert because it will be massive... and delicious!
- Cigarettes and gas are much cheaper
- Good, live music is not hard to find
- There are many old cars still in use... because there aren't icy roads coated in salt to corrode the cars!
- Dilapidated yards exist in every state

another difference is:

you know how you could be driving out in the country, on a country hwy or road. Then out of no where you'll see a bar/pub with a volleyball net or a softball park, then back to farm fields and cow pastures.

Well in the south replace the bar with a Church. It tripped me out.

Thanks Kris! Well said!!
Obviously, I am new here...in the forum anyway. I moved down South from WI in 1987, 8 years spent in Nashville, then I moved here to Navarre Beach, Florida. (1/2 way between Pensacola and Destin)

I never tried Grits until Ivan hit, and the Red Cross came by with food for me. Collards too! I actually loved them! (I lost my house and was in a trailer on the water, so ALL food was a good thing!)

Yes, there are messy yards in every state, all depends on the hood.
(we're still cleaning around here....multiple hurricanes rearrange things)

People are very very friendly, that hit me square on the head when I 1st moved. Everyone waves and says howdy! LOVE IT!
Whenever I come to WI and go anywhere, I'm always talking away to "whoever" and after they look at me dumbfounded.....I can finally get a "hello" and then a nice warm WI smile!

Things move a lot slower here...........ya just get used to it. Your blood pressure goes way DOWN though!

Rust on cars, yes, it's non-exhistant. Just be careful buying a used car.......it's probably been in salt water at some point.

Desserts ARE massive, and so are the heaping platters of cheap seafood!
Servers call you "honey", "sweetie" and children address you with "Yes ma'am, no ma'am, thankyou ma'am".

CONS:
Hurricanes (trust me on this one)
Sharks (although I have had very close encounters, only one bite..... 8O )
No good cheese, unless you want to pay over $7.00 a pound, or order online in the winter. (they won't ship here in the summer)
No REAL brats.
Try to find a Packer game on TV....you MUST have satillite!!!!
I saw Miller Lite at the grocery store this AM "on sale" for $14.99 a 12-pack. ha ha ha

Other than that, I must say........I do not miss the snow, I prefer my feet planted on the beach.........I'll take the heat! And the tropical drinks and beach bars are fantastic!!!!!

But I still miss Cheeseland, and once my house is built I'll head up for a Packer Game again! (do they still let you smoke in public places up there? They banned it everywhere in FL 2 years ago)
