For the seniors and other arthritic, 'gimping', underexercised couch potatoes among us, I can personally recommend water/pool excercising/swimming.
In Nov.'02 I electively (meaning out of pocket/insurance did not cover) sought PT for the purpose of building up muscles of the right hip to hopefully avoid/put off the Total Hip Replacement my doc. said I needed. After the first session I was lame again for 3 days, but the second was sceduled for the pool of our local Country Inn. So I went 'just to see'; was taught some pool exercises and such, and just played in the pool after the 'therapy scession'.
The next day I felt
absolutely great, more alert and energetic both physically and mentally.
I cancelled the third scession at PT (to be 'on land' again) and never looked back. I went to the 'beach' at the County Inn for several months on my own. Then tried the YMCA exercise thing in our high school pool that was very good too, but I found the water temp. waaay toooo coooold. :?
Then, by searching the "Net" I learned there is a 'therepy pool' in the fitness center connected with Baldwin Hosp. It's a 25 minute drive from home, but checked it out and Oh My Dog, wonderful. They have 'open/uninstructed' periods, for a reasonable price, clean clean facility, and
warm water - 89 to 90 degrees F. Absolutely heaven!
At this point in time, between water 'workouts' and glucosamin +cod liver oil, I have not used the walking cane in over 2 3/4 years, am 99% free of hip pain, am on NO perscription meds for anything and feel great.
So look for and try out a Water Therapy Pool near YOU. :!:
