How Do You Make Friends?

I was going to post this under pet peeves, but maybe it goes with this topic better. Last night we had one of those situations again dealing with someone that comes on too strong, overwhelming, whatever you call it. Really hard to explain it.

This guy comes up to us that we never met before and asked if he could buy us a drink, which I thought was odd. Some of the questions he asked seemed to make us uncomfortable, but really don't know why. Maybe it was the way he asked things or the comments he made. Like you felt put on the spot or that if you said the wrong thing he'd get on you about it. I told you it was hard to explain.

I know he said he was trying to make friends, but other people didn't care for him either. It wasn't that he was being rude, that's not the case. Kind of too much of a pest. I really enjoy talking with others even if I don't know them, but this person I just wanted to get away from.

I've had this with people before, but not many people are like this. If someone else can explain this personality type better than me, go ahead. I'd like to hear your take on it.

I know the type of person you are talking about. Most often, at least with the ones I've encountered, they have been drinking a bit too much. Last time I was in a local bar here there was a woman who've I've seen in there before...actually she is there every time I've gone there so must be there all the time. Anyway, she was drunk as she usually is and she came up to me and introduced herself and told me all about her divorce, kids, etc. and asked me all kinds of personal questions. Then she started in on how we were so much alike and I thought "what?" I'm nothing like her because I don't get drunk, get kicked out of the bar for being loud or go home with some strange guy like she does. I wanted to say that to her but I was nice and kept it to myself. Then I started talking to other people that I knew there and I tried to ignore her. Finally she got the hint and left me alone. I really hate it when a drunk person hangs all over you!

I find it more often in a bar because that's where people tend to socialize more, but alcohol gives them too much confidence sometimes.

I've had it happen when people aren't drinking or at a bar, but not so often. Probably because you wouldn't start pestering strangers in a store like that.

Sometimes these people are just manipulators, but try to trick you into thinking something is wrong with you or getting you to do things you really don't want to. They can also be too judgemental. Other times they are too needy.

Anyway, this is how NOT to make friends.
