What do you remember about man's first steps on the moon?
Just prior to the launch of Apollo 11, I sent a letter to the astronauts addressed to Tranquility Base, The Moon hoping it would somehow be carried aboard.. the letter was returned several days later marked "Insufficient Postage".. wish I'd kept it!
Re: Where Were You When Man First Walked On The Moon?
I was in a bar with a a good friend(who since has passaed away). We ordered some hot sandwitches and tapppers of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. As we waited for the food we watched the first step on the moon.
The summer of 1969 I just graduated from high school. That summer I worked at Banta's midway plant and one of the jobs I worked on was a special display package of moon landing for Life Magazine. This was the only job I ever had that required me to work "the graveyard shift"
The rate of pay was $2.85/hour and the work week was 37 1/2 hrs. Any work beyond that was over time at the rate of 1.5*hourly rate.
We have come a long ways, haven't we. Brian Adams sang a song titled "the summer of '69" I lived it and miss it at times, especially my good friend Paul.

I watched it because my teacher told us we had to. I thought it was boring and didn't get what the big deal was about it but then I was only 8 at the time. I do remember my older siblings and parents being awestruck by it all though.

My mom had her tubes tied in 1969... I was born in 1972 (that didn't work out too well for her lol)... therefore, I was trying to be prevented back then
Re: Where Were You When Man First Walked On The Moon?
I was a miracle baby.. my mom had an ovarian cyst.. doctors said she couldn't become pregnant. During her pregnancy with me, she started bleeding and the doctors told her that if the bleeding didn't stop, they would have to take me.. next morning the bleeding stopped. I was born breech, jaundiced, and premature at just 4 pounds..
1972? I have socks older than you are

I do remember watching it on T.V. and at the time I knew it was really awesome and couldn't quite wrap my mind around how far the moon actually was. Kinda foggy on the finer details as to where I was, or who I was with but my guess I watched it at school.

Not to get off subject but have to say, all my babies were miracle babies. First one I almost lost as she was premature and small with complications. Second we both almost died and the last two was against Dr's orders to not have anymore and I was lucky I made it through. So many miracles life has granted me and to tie it in with this subject...watching a man walk on the moon was just another miracle that I was lucky to have been able to witness.

Isn't life great? People ask where the miracles are.. they are always right there in front of us..

My mom had her tubes tied in 1969 after having her 5th child. On an evening in July of 1972 she was riding her bike when she fell & was hurt. They took her to the hospital & found she was bleeding. I was born at 4:20 the next morning. She had no clue she was even pregnant, just thought she had gained a little weight.

I sometimes think that maybe that is why life has been a challenge for me. A minister once told me that I am the work of god, there is a purpose for me & that is why I made it into the world, considering.

One of my cousins worked on the Lunar Lander.. I used to have a lapel pin given to Grumann Aircraft employees with the Lander on it.. lost it over the years.

A good memory associated with your friend.
BTW, took my sister to a Summer of '60 tour of Adams' at Alpine - her first concert.

Cool that even if you thought it wasn't much, you appreciated the gravity of it (no pun intended) by your family's reaction.

Amen.

I remember family in the warm glow of the tube. Not the cold blue light that most TV reminds me of now. Me laying on the floor, relatively close up, just like Packer games. I was conscious of not sitting too close because I believed it wasn't good for your eyesight. But this was special.
I was thirteen and remembered that President Kennedy had made a promise that America would do this and marveled at the wonder of America, and believed that we could do anything positive and good that we set our minds to.
