Re: Ever Wonder The Effects Of Music On Our Brains.
I already knew that the Ramones make you exercise better. Any fast jumpy music works well for exercise.
Music played in stores to get you to buy more I knew already. There's lots of things stores do to get you to buy more and you don't even realize it. Lots of studies have been done on the shopping patterns of people to get you to buy more.
Music at the dentist doesn't make the experience more pleasant. I still don't like someone poking around in my mouth and using a drill on my teeth. I think a sedative might work better.
I know I've heard some of my designer friends say that when brainstorming ideas for a design that music without words works better since the words are distracting. A few of them mentioned listening to ambient music.

I remember years back when the kids were much younger I was getting so upset with them on the way to school with their arguing with each other. Then I started putting my Yanni CD on and they would spend more time listening to the music and less time fighting.

It's funny how the brain associates music with life events too. I can hear a song from the 1970s or 1980s and know exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard it! But yet most times I can't remember what I did just last week. LOL

Play some heavy metal and see what happens.
I'm surprised that they didn't yell at you for playing Yanni. Kids don't like their parents' music. I remember how we used to get on my dad for getting out his albums. We used to go outside just to escape.

I know exactly what you mean. Many of my high school days or guys I went out with will come to mind when I hear certain songs.

Actually they liked Yanni back then. I guess I taught them to like all kinds of music as I also like what I guess you can call their music, but really it's all our music. lol We sometimes race to turn the music up if a good song comes on that my daughter likes too. My youngest son has a love for older music from when I was younger such as AC DC, Beatles, etc.
My 17 year old has a huge range of music interests from Bach to everything now. I guess it's from playing piano and many years of Violin.
She also knows all the words to everything too, as she seems to have a great memory for the words of songs.

I know listening to certain songs makes me feel depressed if it's a sad and slow song. Or if it's a song that reminds me of something sad/bad. Songs I hear in the grocery store leave me feeling depressed especially when I'm by myself, but some of that has to do with being alone when hubby was gone.
Country music always makes me depressed, but then again I hate it. Around here in the stores you seldom hear country music. Probably because shoppers will buy less. I remember my neighbor telling me when they played country music or slow music at his workplace that production went down by quite a bit. In a factory type setting that's not a good thing.
I prefer faster upbeat rock music. That makes me feel energized.

These days what you hear in a store isn't what I consider Muzak, or at least not as we know it. You never seem to hear the instrumental music anymore, it's often songs that are or were heard on the radio. Muzak reminds me of the dentist...yuck!
