For me, it was most green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts, lima beans..
I always told my mom if there were no other food but fried chicken and rice, I'd be happy.. chuck wagon steak and mashed potatoes was my other favorite. They still are.
Re: What Foods Did You Hate As A Kid, But Love Now?
Mushrooms, cream corn, hmm that's about it.
I eat frozen veggies that I didn't before, but not because I didn't like that veggie, I just didn't want if frozen. Now I pretty much don't eat canned veggies.
I think a longer answer would have been given if you asked me what things did I eat as a kid that I won't eat now. I think I'm pickier, but in a good way. I like better quality in certain foods. Other things just don't taste that good anymore.
Re: What Foods Did You Hate As A Kid, But Love Now?
I see a theme going on here. lol
PEAS!!
My Mom would open a can (store brand, I'm sure) of peas, warm them and roll them on our plates. YUCK!! Even the dog would not eat them if you try to feed them to her under the table!
Back then you had to eat all the food on your plate. (no spoiled kids back then). I would try to hide them under my mash potatoes but then I would have to eat that, I even tried to swallow them whole. Guess that was about the best approach. lol
Re: What Foods Did You Hate As A Kid, But Love Now?
You ever see dog food that comes with peas in the gravy? My GF's dog used to gulp his food, yet by the time he was done, he'd somehow manage to spit every pea back out onto his plate.. darndest thing!
Re: What Foods Did You Hate As A Kid, But Love Now?
I hated broccoli as a kid but love it now, especially with cheese on it or made in to cheesy broccoli soup. Yum!
I also hated peas as a kid. We were forced to eat foods we didn't like and had to stay at the table until we finished. My sister and I used to hide the peas under our plates and squish them so they stuck there. We were the ones who had to do the dishes so we never got caught. LOL I still won't eat peas by themselves but I will eat the small ones in a macaroni salad or something like that. We also had to eat creamed corn which to me looked like someone had thrown up on the plate! I still gag when ever I see it!
I NEVER made my kids eat foods if they didn't like them. I would have them try a bite of something and if they said they didn't care for it, then that was that.
Re: What Foods Did You Hate As A Kid, But Love Now?
But for some reason, as an adult, it irks me that some people simply will not try new foods. Push the envelope, people! You might just like it!

I remember a friend of mine had a dog that was a picky eater and could do the same thing.

Someone I know comes to mind. She hates Fish! How can you say such a broad thing? Catfish tastes so different from blue gills, fried, steamed, ocean, lake, breaded, not breaded, fillets, whole with eyeballs...so many ways to cook fish, so many different types of fish, with so many different flavors.
I just don't get it.
There are things I don't like that is made a certain way but if you make it different it will be good. You have to try different ways of cooking food before you can say you don't like something.
Re: What Foods Did You Hate As A Kid, But Love Now?
Good example.
I truly dislike Cream Of Mushroom Soup. Yuck.
I really strongly hate raw onions. Puke, Puke.
So when I first heard of green bean casserole and saw it was made with Cream of Mushroom Soup and French Fried Onions, my first thought was. Oh, this will be soooo nasty!!!
Re: What Foods Did You Hate As A Kid, But Love Now?
My GF, Cindy, was one.. we'd go out to eat and she'd either order a cheeseburger or a pork tenderloin sandwich (unless we went to a buffet).. she would eat the same things at home. I started out cooking dinners then gave up because she would only eat certain things.

I know what you mean. It's don't knock it until you try it. I like to try new foods, as long as it's not bugs or some weird animals parts. lol
It's like the people that think you can only eat a pizza with traditional toppings. They think it's weird to have a white pizza or a pizza with chicken and bbq sauce, yet I see it on many restaurant menus. That's just one example.

I know a number of people that don't like any seafood. How can you say fish is the same as shrimp, lobster, scallops or crab? They are all different. Then someone will say that hate seafood and they've only tried fish or maybe they only tried shrimp. My own SIL gagged while watching a cooking show where they prepared a fish dish. What a weirdo. I don't like all foods, but I'm not sitting there making gagging sounds at a TV. I'm not talking about jokingly gagging, but real sounds like puking.
Then some people are turned off by the smell of fish, so they think it will taste bad. How many foods smell kind of funny, but taste good? Hard boiled eggs, anyone? That's just one example.
Dang, I haven't had good seafood in a while. I could go for some shrimp.

That's one way to do it. I'm a picky veggie eater so I try to make the veggies I do like all different ways and have found some ways tastes better than others. Then there are some things that won't taste good no matter what.

That certainly brings to mind how I fell in love with BLT Pizza.
I was asked if I wanted to try it and I thought it sounded nasty with warm mayo on it? How gross is that?
Well, it's really very good at Kaisers in Kenosha. Mayo, bacon, tomatoes, shredded cheese with shredded lettuce on top. Oh, that really makes me want one right about now.
If we even heard of this when I was a kid I would not eat it I'm sure. lol Pizza had to be Pizza with the traditional toppings.
Re: What Foods Did You Hate As A Kid, But Love Now?
I never had rice with butter and sugar, but since rice is kind of plain and is used is some desserts, why not?
I love to make the rice that is cooked with milk and sugar, then topped with cinnamon. We always just called it rice with the cinnamon and sugar. I don't know the actual name. Maybe it's creamed rice? I know it's not rice pudding because that is different ingredients.

Lmao that's too funny. I remember trying to make my kids eat everything on their plates. Then I remembered my older sister doing that to me when I was a kid & stopped doing it to my kids.
My sister made the worst meatloaf... omg it was horrible!! Big onion & tomato chunks & would make me sit at the table for as long as it took to choke it down with water & buttered bread. I had meatloaf nightmares forever & to this day can not stand the sight of the stuff.

I do not like cream of mushroom or mushrooms at all, BUT a good friend of mine once made steak cutlets in the oven with cream of mushroom & cream of celery & I loved it. I now make it once in a while, but it is the only way I have ever used cream of mushroom.
